What Does Torque @ ____ RPM Mean?

So my family is looking to buy either the 2005 Toyota Sienna or 2005 Honda Oddysey. I was comparing the power of both vans and the torque measurement like this:

Sienna (3.3 Liters):
242 ft-lb @ 3600rpm

Oddysey (3.5 Liter):
250 ft-lb @ 4500rpm

While I understand that the Oddysey has better torque, does the higher rpm mean that the full power doesn't kick in until the engine is revving more? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Basically, yes. It also means that the Sienna has more "grunt" at lower RPM's.

All this basically means is that you get 242 fount pounds of torque (which for this vehicle is the optimum, but not necessarily maximum output) at 3600 rotations/revolutions per minute.... meaning the engine is working/revving less vigorously to get produce amount, relative to what the Odyssey's engine would be.

Even though the amount of torque is slightly lower in the Sienna, you'll probably be fooled into feeling that it's more powerful because it will kick in earlier.

Thanks for the input guys. We test drove both cars and are probably going to go for an Oddysey (even though my dad works for Toyota  Laugh out loud). My understanding also is that the Oddysey will do better at hauling.

Roughly said, max torque indicates the peak efficiency of the engine, and rpm shows precisely at which rpm you will get it.

242 to 250 is no difference, these 3% will never show up.

Both engines are modern designed V6-24, and when I compare with the 3.5L V6 from Renault, performance figures are pretty similar.

The difference however is in the rpm at which max efficiency is achieved, 3,600 for the Sienna and 5,000 for the Odyssey (w/standard VTEC engine).
This indicates that the Toyota has a smaller bore to stroke ratio (= a longer stroke) than the Honda (= shorter stroke).
Result: to keep the same road speed, the Honda will have turn faster.

Normal accelerations while driving, eg. from 40 to 60mph, should be better with the Toyota while it would require a kickdown with the Honda to reach high rpm values.

You also want to see the torque spread. An engine that pulls well from low RPM will have peak torque at a lower rev count, and more or less hold that level thru a given RPM range. The VW/Audi 1.8 turbo comes to mind, peak torque @ 1,800 RPM's thru about 3,500 RPM's

Yes, the turbo changes the game, but none of the car in question have such.

I forgot to mention that the Honda is, at least on paper, 7 to 11% heavier (acc. to versions) than the Toyota. Those 250-400lbs alone will require a higher rpm to keep the same speed as the Toyo.

True, although the Ody model we are thinking of has the feature where half the cylnders shut down when the van is cruising. Plus it's ULEV-2. So confusing!  Laugh out loud. In the end though, it will be my mom that drives the car, and she is far from a hard driver, so I think the power differences should not be huge for her.

Fairly general rule of thumb is the "flatter" the torque curve, the more responsive or flexible it will feel in general day-to-day driving...as opposed to a "peaky" torque curve.

It's a minivan...why the hell does it matter? lol. They have almost no pickup whatsoever, and if you do tow something x/c with it, you can almost count on having to replace your tranny, unless you install a new tranny cooler and keep the thing off the mountains.

It matters because a fully loaded minivan can definitely benefit from torquey engines. For a minivan, having an engine that produces plenty of torque at low RPM's is beneficial to minimize the loss in performance and safety in passing and other maneuvers that require extra power. Putting an anemic engine into a minivan therefore does not make too much sense.

On the other hand, both the Toyota and Honda V6 engines will be more than plenty for minivan duty, and both products are truly excellent in the category. Minivans make a lot more sense for most people than SUV's, if people-carrying is the prime raison-d'etre. Of course, they don't make the same statement as SUV's, and thus they lose their appeal for self-conscious buyers.
