Hi all,

I am planning a holiday (vacation) to the Caribbean but am a little wary of the rainfall quoted in the holiday brochures.

I was wondering if anyone here knows about the rainfall on islands such as St Lucia, Barbados etc and when/how it falls eg in heavy short bursts, at night etc as I cant see the rain apart from the main rain season can be that bad or no one would go! Obviously many islands have rainy seasons and hurricane season etc but overall I mean.

Any help much appreciated

It tends to be more rainy in the summer. Mostly all the time, though, its quick heavy showers.

I was in Barbados May 2000, and we had 1 day out of 2 weeks where the rain just fell all day. It didn't matter though, we just helped ourselves to the "all inclusive" drink and made the best of it!

Good luck in choosing where to go.

Here in the caribbean, we have two "seasons".

Wet and Dry. it doesn't get any simpler than that.

theoretically, Wet is from June/July to the end of November.
and Dry is from December to June.

used to be like that on the mark years ago, but lately the world's weather pattern seems to be changing.
It's mid january and we still have a fair deal of rain lately. I'm sick of it. I can't stand the rain for this long of a period.

But a text book definition of tropical weather involves clear cool mornings, then some light to moderate showers (high humidity) in the early afternoon, followed by slightly humid clear evenings/nights.

Hurricane season is from July to November I think.

hope that helps, and I hope our dry season kicks in soon.

Maintain own separation with terrain!

From my experience, during the northern winter season, it's generally just quick passing showers, and not very often. They can be quite heavy, but rarely last very long. At least this was the case in St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Kitts/Nevis and St. Martin.

The only island where I've had steady rain for a matter of days was Jamaica in January, where I spent a rather damp week of vacation. What a crappy trip...it's a nice island, but I'll never go there again at that time of year! I've also heard of bad (rainy) experiences in December/January in Puerto Rico.

So, you're probably pretty safe at this time of year as long as you stick to the eastern/southern Caribbean (a.k.a. the Windward and Leeward Islands). Of course there are never any guarantees with weather, but that is why those islands are so popular (and so expensive!).

I used to go to Aruba every February since I was little til the college days. During the few times there, I'd go by the 5 min rain rule. It rains moderately then stops within the 5 min range.
On the other hand, I normally go there in the summer now since college isn't in the way, haven't experienced rain yet in July/Aug months.
