Anyone catch this PBS special (part II airing tonight) last night? To understand America 100 years ago (and the world).. this program painted a very chilling picture what it was like. If you haven't seen the program, it's probably best not to comment. It's dripping with racial overtones ..not suitable for the weak hearted (those in extreme denial). One historian noted that in the 20th century only two events sparked coast-to-coast racial riots, the assassination of MLK and Jack Johnson becoming the worlds 1st black heavy weight champion boxer. Even editorials from newspapers such as the LA Times published some shocking comments! If you can't discuss institutionalized racism reasonably... please pass on this thread.

Part II airs tonight when everything goes south for Johnson.

Going to talk about disaster logistics and get a primer on Thailand from the one UAA facualty member who was there the past three weeks studying the transportation and logisitics problems involved.

Your thread comes across as being composed by someone of above average intelligence. Therefore, I find it perplexing that you would start such a topic here and expect it to be discussed in a "reasonable manner". Surly, a member in good standing for almost three years have seen how this kind of thread often goes off the rails. I'm not trying to criticize you... I'm just trying to be realistic.

Peace

I watched (and TIVO'ed) both parts. A superb show, without question.

Agreed! The week before I watched the two-parter on Woodrow Wilson on PBS and given that both of these documentaries reflect the same era... I thought I had a pretty good grasp of what the times were like back then and wow...what an awakening! This is an time period that affected my of our grand fathers and great grandfathers!

Excuse my slowness AWspicious. I guess am one of those folks that would love to believe most members of this site would prefer to watch this show as opposed to Birth of a Nation!

I caught most of the two part show. Simply awesome. Jack Johnson was truly gifted in so many ways. He was the epitome of being "Your Own Man".

I've seen, "The Great White Hope" (great movie), and thought this made me fairly knowledgeable of Jack Johnson. How wrong I was. This documentary is simply outstanding and inspirational.

This is not a depressing documentary at all and should bring pride to both black and white people alike that Jack Johnson was a part of the American experience.

You're only as good as your last departure.
