Since I enjoy sharing pictures and there seems to be quite an appetite for the pictures that I post, here is the latest set of scans for your viewing pleasure.

In going through my old prints, I suddenly realized that I don't have as many "scenery" pictures as I thought. I spent almost all of the 1990's taking pictures of airplanes. Not a bad thing per se, but I wish I would've spent more effort on scenery. Plus, a lot of the pictures that I did take probably wouldn't be of much interest to any of you, such as the 210 Freeway Extension project (which I still need to take some "current" completed pictures of before I post any of the "before shots") and "before, during, and after" shots of various construction projects in various areas.

But I did manage to find some older prints for your viewing pleasure.

This is a stretch of road in west-central CA. When my cousin was incarcerated at Avenal State Prison, from 1999-2002, I would make frequent trips up to see him. This is a shot of that lonely road that is about 10 miles west of I-5, between the Kettleman Hills and the Coast Ranges. If you have ever flown between LAX/ONT/SNA/SAN and SJC/SFO/OAK, you have definitely flown over this spot. It's basically empty land out in the middle of nowhere. Nothing remarkable in and of itself. But when you live in LA and are surrounded by endless strip malls and housing projects and concrete that seems to stretch to infinity, a sight such as this one is a welcome treat to the senses. It's just too bad the circumstances under which I obtained this picture.

This is a shot not far from the above picture. But it is a main road, SR41, (It might be 46...I don't remember....I'll have to consult a map.) between Kettleman City and Paso Robles, approximately 8 miles SW of Kettleman City. Although you'd never guess it from THIS stretch of road, this is one of the most dangerous main highways in the state due to its topography and lack of lighting in many places.

Facing east on a stretch of Avenal road.

Moving on to another part of the state, here is a panaramic view of the old Ontario Airport terminal less than a year from its closure and the grand opening of the two Twin Terminals. It was taken from the dirt lot at the end of Vineyard Ave, near the Airport police building, on the south end of the field. I remember taking this picture like yesterday. There are 9 planes visble in the picture. And all but three of them are either extinct, or on their way out. Picture circa December 1997.

Looking north at the San Gabriel Mountains, circa January 2000. Picture taken from a side street, just west of Haven Avenue, a block south of Foothill Blvd, near the Rancho Cucamonga/Ontario city limits.

A view of the same mountains, but from a different vantage point. Facing northeast from a hilltop in West Covina overlooking the Eastern San Gabriel Valley. South Hills West Covina is the bulk of what's visible in the foreground, but portions of Covina, Glendora, San Dimas, and La Verne are also visible in the distance.

San Dimas, 1999. Just off the exit at Arrow Highway. This scene no longer exists. The San Dimas Sign still does, but the tall Levitz sign has been removed and the KFC in the background (you can't tell that it's a KFC, but it is) was torn down and rebuilt. Also, the landscaping was redone. I will take a current picture of the same location in the near future so you can see how it's changed.

About a mile west of the above picture, on Bonita Ave in Downtown/Old Town San Dimas. This scene has remain virtually unchanged for at least 20 years. It looks the same as it did when I was a first grader.

A few different images of the Salton Sea, in the southeastern part of the state. For more detailed info on it, do a Google search. Despite looking very scenic, the lake is basically a cesspool that's eventually going to dry up and turn the entire Imperial and Coachella Valleys into arsenic and who-knows-what-else Dust Bowls.

A real shame actually.

Screw it, I can't get the pictures to work. Maybe webshots.com doesn't allow you to use photos on their site. Anyway, if you're interested, go to:

I believe that should link to my pictures from LA.

By the way, I like the Photos Matt.

Pictures 5, 6 and 8 look like nice places to live. Is that a reality?..

Thanks for posting the pics, Matt. One certainly gets a much better idea of how life is in different areas with pics like these, and not the "Hollywood" and postcard photos.

Great pics again, Matt!

Random thoughts:
Pictures 1-3: SR 46 is the road between Lost Hills and Paso Robles. I recall driving on it once while journeying from Claremont up to Monterey. It was also during the early evening, which made it doubly dangerous. In checking a map, it looks like 41 comes south out of Kettleman City, then joins up with 46 near Shandon (never heard of that town) for the run to Paso Robles. Since you were 8 miles from Kettleman City, I'm thinking 46 and 41 hadn't met up yet, so you were still on 41?

Picture 5-Haven Avenue near ONT: love the orange groves in that area of the valley. There used to be lot more of them back in the day.

Picture 7-Levitz: you knew where you were when you saw that sign!

Picture 8-Bonita Avenue: there's a excellent model train store not too far up the street. I forget the name of it.

Matt, Nice pics,

Great pics of San Dimas, terrible that they tore down the Levitz sign, a definite landmark in that area.

Awaiting the retaliatory Crapchester thread now....  Big grin

Matt: love the pics--even though I've been to a lot of these places, it's cool that someone besides me also thinks they're interesting enough to document. Make sure you hang on to this stuff, though... it's hard to find documentary shots like these once the scenery changes.

KROC: You know, I don't see anyone complaining about Matt's SoCal threads. I suspect they're pretty popular since a lot of folks have either lived here or visited a number of times. And I'm glad he creates a new thread when he posts new pics--it makes them easy to spot.

Besides, I'm going to try and do an installment of my own later tonight...  Smile
