OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) -- An Oklahoma senator hopes to revive cockfighting in the state by putting tiny boxing gloves on the roosters instead of razors.

The Oklahoma legislature outlawed the blood sport in 2002 because of its cruelty to the roosters, which are slashed and pecked to death while human spectators bet on the outcome.

But State Sen. Frank Shurden, a Democrat from Henryetta and a long-time defender of cockfighting, said the ban had wiped out a $100-million business.

To try to revive it, he has proposed that roosters wear little boxing gloves attached to their spurs, as well as lightweight, chicken-sized vests configured with electronic sensors to record hits and help keep score.

Pretty hilarious if you ask me.  Laugh out loud

Legal in most of NM, but illegal in Albuquerque. Hopefully my home state will follow ABQ and make it illegal. It's time for this disgusting "sport" to end. I believe it is also legal in some if not all of Louisiana.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

Alias1024 sums it up, nicely. This Frank Shurden must be some kind of a rube and apparently oblivious to the fact that suggesting roosters be fitted with tiny boxing gloves and vests makes him look like a real bonehead to many of his constituents. If he stays on track with comments like this, it could get him laughed out of office on the next go-around. Pathetic!

Who would bother to put boxing gloves and a sensitive vest on a rooster just to watch it fight? Why not just go to a boxing match!

Senator Shurden, the only thing I remember about him was his secretary and her big hair. (Definitely from bu fu OK). Listen guys, the OK state senate is a joke. How do I know? Because I worked there for 2 years as an intern. Stupid shit like this happens all the time and people are always like, WTF? What senators and representatives alike need to discuss, is the poor public education in Oklahoma.
