I just received the first phone bill of my new appartment. Here it goes :

Line subscription (2 months+20days) = 34,66€ (13€/month)
Phone calls : 3,03€
Exceptional services : 46,12€
Total : 83€80 for a f*cking 1h25min and 36 secs of actuall call.

They charged me 46€12 just to press a button to activate a phone line that has been there for already over 20 years.

In France we are supposed to be able to use another phone provider, but guess what ? In order to do so you ought to have an existing Farce Telecom line first. And when you take one, by contract you have to keep it for at least 12 months, or pay the remaining months if you terminate it before the 12 months.
That means before you ever dream of paying less for the phone, you will still have to pay 46,12+12*13 = 202,12 f*cking euro for a total absence of service. (their call fees are so high that the first thing done is usually to get an additional provider, for which you pay no subscription, just the actual calls - yet, you still have to pay France Telecom).

Is that highway robbery, or is that gunpoint stealing ?

Once again, RHAA !

Cheers,

The problem is : using a phone does not cost a lot. having a phone is what is expensive !

Plus, I forgot to add : they are going to price up the line price. Right now it is 13€/month, very soon (before April) it is going to 14€/month. Those bloodsuckers haad the government accept it by saying they would lower the call prices. But Nobody uses them anymore to make a call !!!

... I only really keep my phone to have Internet access (and I don't even need to - but it's a bitch to get rid of). I have a few hours worth of pre-paid Skype time, so I use that call people - and then I have my cell phone (0 DKK in subscription & extremely cheap to phone & messagieing) if people want to call me  Big thumbs up

Ah, cellphones... very usefully, but bl**dy expensive as well.

Calling a landline from a landline can be as cheap as under 0.01 € / minute, even in international you can be under 3 euro cent/minute.

If you want to call a cellphone, it will never be under 19 eurocent / minute. (that is another form of highway robbery)

Cheers,

I heard something about my cell phone company wanting to export the concept to the UK in collaboration with easyMobile (or was it Virgin? can't remember).

Less and less true. I agree it's too expensive, but it's still the most reliable way to have phone.
I will perhaps switch to a full "degroupage" with Free and the VoIP offer, but I fear to have a lower quality. For the moment I'm half degrouped (LOL) and the phone calls with Free are well ... free, but with a slight echo, or sometimes no so slight.

And you have a free brain cancer included.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

@707CMF

I am sure there is unbundling being done in France, too. You could get your entire line from another provider but are usually restricted in choosing another service provider. Only the former monopolist, in your case France Telecom, is forced to allow you to choose from all service providers.

The € 13.00 cover the expenses for the equipment that's behind your simple phone line and the commitment of France Telecom to provide a phone line even in the remotest areas.

Yes, there is unbundling (degroupage) being done in France, it is possible everywhere in Paris , however, one can not get the entire line from another provider without first having a line at France Telecom. Hence the 202+€ they will always get.

None, ........ unless you have Scottish or Dutch ancestors. (ou Auvergnat)

FT like any other former national PTT has to make money somewhere. If they did not, be sure the shareholder called "government" would find a way to squeeze you in another way.
The network was laid by FT, is maintained by FT and is expanded and upgraded by FT, it is terribly expensive and only recouping the (perpetual) investments is calculated over spans of several years.
Since the competition (alternative service providing > low call rates) is extremely fierce, FT has to follow the trend and cut usage prices. Furthermore, they know that the chances they will loose you as a client are probably bigger than 50%.
What remains ? the connection fee and the (bi-)monthly subscription fees.

Make no mistake, the alternative service providers are playing on the back of FT, their investment is (proportionally) totally insignificant, they rely usually on IP service (they do not guarantee a QoS nor a speed), and they can be happy to make 0.005 E per minute since their overheads are low and fixed.

If you compare FT with other European players, you will see that are far from being squeezed.
