Hi! I will be in HEL on July 1st from 1225 'till 1745

I want to visit the city... maybe go to the park with the famous statue and the shopping center. I want to be back at the airport by 1615. Do I have time. I'm have no bags and am comming from Germany, so I don't need to go thru passport controll.

What shall I see? What is the best way to do it?

Thank you!

Well, it is very short but you could be able to do it.

Take the Finnair Bus, it only has one stop to the Railway Station. The normal bus has several stops and you loose time. Finnair Bus is something around 4.60 EUR per way. Bus goes during day hours every 15min if not mistaken and the trip takes around 30min. (chk the Finnair website, they might have details available).

I love the area around the harbor. Do you mean the silver statue? Which shopping center, Stockmann?

Well, you can take the bus #615/615T/615N to downtown, it takes about 35-40 min and costs 3,40 € one way. You can also take the Finnair bus.

In downtown there is Stockmann department store, Sokos, Forum shopping centre and other shops. Then there is Itäkeskus shopping centre, but I think you don't have enough time to visit there, because you have to take the metro journey (takes about 15 minutes).

Here you can find information:

That is really a short visit.

In your case I would try to forget about rushing around Helsinki city center and perhaps going to Jumbo, which is rather big shopping center near to the airport. The busses (51, 61N, 615N) run every 5-15 minutes (the ride is about 10 minutes) and costs 2,20€.

Of course, you MAY manage to do a short sightseeing tour in the city center, but there's always the risk you'll stuck on traffic jam.

How about some planespotting?  Smile

In all seriousness. You can prob see all the "major" sights in Helsinki in an afternoon. There is nothing much to see.

To be appriciated Helsinki needs to be savoured, by taking your time.

For example.. Loved to sit on the grass at the Splanadi (spelling?) and watch the locals move in herds following the and the sunlight as the sun moved, guess they wanted to catch the every single ray of light (it was Sept) before they loose it for the winter. To me thats much more intereting than landmarks and sights.

When i visited i had an awsome time and would return, but only because i knew people there that showed me around by going to the bars locals went to, including some intersting one .. one with tractors all over the place.

Ahhh /.. Good Times!

I agree, but I can't spend more time there. I had to put in a lot of effort just to get a long connection there  Smile

That's a rather short trip indeed. Since you'd probably be able to spend only 2 to 2,5 hours in the City, I would rather look around in the closer vicinity of the airport, for example there's a pretty interestin aviation museum near the Vantaa airport (if you're into visiting museums).

If you choose to go to the city though, I'd reccommend taking a look around the harbour (a 15 minute walk down the Esplanade from the Railway Station), maybe also around the Töölönlahti bay, which can provide some rather scenic views. There's also the tram number 3T that does a tour around the city in around 30 to 45 minutes, visiting some of the more known sights in Helsinki, the Olympic stadium for example.

The sea, though, is something I always take time to admire when in Helsinki, because this is what gives this city it's specific spirit in my opinion.
