Since my signature is one of his lines from "Animal House", I thought I'd share what I found...

From MSNBC.com

LOS ANGELES - John Vernon, a stage-trained character actor who played cunning villains in film and TV and made his comedy mark as Dean Wormer in “National Lampoon’s Animal House,” has died. He was 72. he died in his sleep following complications from heart surgery.

Movie fans may know him best for his role in “Animal House” as Dean Wormer, who is bent on expelling the hard-partying Delta fraternity house. The movie, starring John Belushi and Tim Matheson, is one of the most popular comedies ever made.

I havn't seen that film in ages. Some comedies you can watch once or twice, that one you can watch over and over again.

An excellent legacy to remember him by.

Vernon also played the mayor in the first Dirty Harry movie; released in 1971.

Classic exerpt early in the film between him and Inspector Callahan (Eastwood) dialogue is paraphrased:

Callahan:When someone is robbing a woman with intent to commit rape, I shoot the b@st#$d; That's my policy.

Mayor (Vernon): Intent?

Callahan:When a naked man is chasing after a woman with a butcher knife and a H@#d-*n, I figure he sure as hell ain't collecting for the Red Cross.

Mayor (after a brief pause): Good point.

He (Vernon) always seemed to be casted as either a jerk or an obstructionist.

I understand he was cast as "Dean Wormer" thanks to his part as "Fletcher" in "The Outlaw Josey Wales", also with Clint Eastwood.

Best line from the movie comes from him:"There's another saying, Senator: Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining."

And on a side note, Vernon wasn't the original choice for the part of Wormer in "Animal House". Several sources claim that the part was written for Jack Webb, but Webb turned John Landis, the director, down on doing the movie.

The greatest stunt/special effect in movie history is when Dean Wormer is sitting at his desk and the golf ball crashes through his window, bounces off his desk and shatters a glass pitcher of water on the desk, continues across the desk, bounces off of a book on the left hand side of the desk and skips back to the right side of the desk where it bounces off of another book on that side, returns to the center of the desk and slows, slows, slows, and as Wormer glares into the camera, it drops into his lap just before it stops. Watch it in slow motion. I'll never figure out how they did that.
(Can you tell that I've watched that movie drunk a time or two?)
The movie would not have been the same without Vernon as Dean Wormer.

UALPHLCS

That was a great line, but you got it wrong.

The line really is.

Fat, Drunk and Stupid is no way to go through life, Roy."
