Have you ever

Y - slept on the ground
Y - cleaned a fish
N - climbed a mountain
N - thrown a punch
Y - ridden a horse
Y - shot a rifle
N - sailed a boat
Y - changed a wheel
Y - built a fire
Y - read the Bible.

Let's see. I've never climbed a mountain that required climbing gear (in Alabama we only have the very toes of the Appalachian Mountains), or sailed a boat (I'm very proficient with a canoe, however), or thrown a punch in anger, but I've done the rest. How about you?

Apparently the military is finding out that there are many young men who have excellent spatial awareness from playing video games, but haven't done much of the above.

I'm a pure city boy... I've ridden horses plenty of times, but that's about it.

Oh yeah, I've changed a tyre - once. Never again. That's what the garage is for.

And what does reading the Bible have to do with being fit for military service? Unless that's an indication of how much torture you can endure?  Big grin (kidding!)

I'm also wondering what reading the Bible has to do with military service. It could be argued that if one reads and adheres to certain portions of the New Testament, they would be against warfare and combat, but then again, that leads this post down a road that I don't want to cross.

The list was compiled by Lt. Col Jeff Cooper USMC ret, who knows more about the art of shooting than just about anybody. You're right that reading the Bible isn't a requirement, but he put it in there. This is not a list from the US Army or anything. I suppose I should've clarified that.

Jasepl, what's so bad about changing a tire? I had to do it on our Grand Caravan for my mother a few months ago (not that she couldn't do it, but it's a man's job--she changes her own oil when I'm at school, but not when I'm at home, for example), and it was pretty easy. But did the van ever look ugly with that spare on it (at least it was full-sized).

While I respect the hell out of Col. Cooper, I have to say this...one does not have be proficient in any of the above areas prior to joining to be successful in the Army, they may help some, but the Army will teach the willing everything they need to adapt to and grow with the Army. Having them prior to military service can be a good thing, but it can also lead people to ignore that which they are taught, which is not USUALLY a good thing in the military. Ask any Drill Sergeant what they would rather have, a guy who already knows everything, or some guy that knows little but is eager and willing to learn.

While I was in the Army I never had to ride a horse, sail a boat or read the Bible (although we were encouraged to do all three in our spare time, and provided facilities for these activities) but the rest was taught to me by competent instructors. If they needed us to do the rest they would've had a manual and block of instruction.

BTW....If most of these folks knew who Jeff Cooper was and what he does they would not bother responding to this post, or would've responded differently...he is an interesting person.

http://www.dvc.org.uk/~johnny/jeff/aboutjff.html
http://home.sprynet.com/~frfrog/cooper.htm

I worry when I like the same person that MD-90 does, but I've met Uncle Jeff and believe in what he preaches about the practicalities and realities of effective firearms use. I have shot IPSC competitions and used what he teaches to do well. (Still won't buy a race gun.)

The 4 Rules should be required learning for anyone who may ever come into contact with an actual firearm.

I'm still not clear if he invented the Weaver Stance, but he perfected its use and how to train it.

He is correct about most things related to shooting. The Colt .45 is the finest CQB pistol ever made, and the Scout is the best rifle for any situation. SOme of the finest firearms manufacturers in the world have built to his specs. Springfield, Steyr, and others.

I was a drill for 5 years, 3 with fresh meatheads and 2 at the Drill Sergeant Academy. Give me a lean, untrained idiot right off the street any day. Re-teaching NCOs in the basic skills is much harder than one would think.
