Non_aviation Forum: A Daily Portal?

I go home from work knowing the latest about tsunami's, political speeches, the latest scores in elections, soccer games, significant incidents that happened at the global scale, trivial or funny events, as well as Michael Jackson, Elbonia, weird religions, how MAC is great, Canada, Europe, and every detail that evolves around the life of (in)active people, all in the midst of useless but amusing posts.

Can the non_aviation forum be considered a daily portal? or even elevated to a cultural portal?

I mean, it's unconscious, but when I come around here, I have many anecdotes and news that I can inform people about that they didn't see or read about yet, whereas when I don't or can't, despite my my.yahoo page making every effort to fill me in with all the important events that interest me every 30 minutes, I fall behind at several occasions.

Just had to say it.. thumbs up for this forum.

Kay

Don't forget it's also great at entertainment, looking at most of the political threads that turn into bitching and name-calling. Wanna see grown-up people bash each other like girls do in Highschool? Come here!

However, each time a political thread remains civil, I agree that it's a good read and offers new perspectives, on top of the info you get.

There's also a bunch of cute stories people post here, about whatever-you-cab-think-off. A rabbit in Turkmenistan choked on its toenails? You are going to read about it here!

And just for the record: It´s spelled "Mac", short for "Macintosh" after the edible kind of apples; It´s not an acronym!  Wink/being sarcastic

Yes, that is the problem and because it is allowed to happen the whole site of airliners.net is diminished in it's quest to be a truly phenomenal aviation site. Until it addresses some of the ridiculousness here in the non-aviation forum it will never be the stellar site we all hope it could be.

As long as even your mildly annoying complaints are allowed as well, it´s all fine with me!  Big thumbs up

I thought you mods were cracking down on this!  Wink/being sarcastic

In any case, the flaming in this forum isn't as bad as that in some other more loosely moderated forums out there. There is some downright nasty stuff out there!

You know what's even more lame than people wasting time reading and posting in non-av?

Other people wasting their time bitching about it.  Insane

As I said, you want a great aviation site? Dilute that kind of teenager nonsense and you will get an awesome aviation site.

Oh c'mon, 787... if you don't like this stuff, *don't* *read* *it.* Is it really that difficult a concept to grasp?

I count nine forums on this site. If you are dissatisfied with this one, stick to the other eight.

    Geez.

I am very happy to hear that Kay! There's been a lot of harsh critique in the past and we were really planning on closing it down not too long ago. I am very happy to see that some of you like it!

Those of you that enjoy this place - please help see to that threads do not go too far or that users misbehave. Even if you personally aren't offended by harsh language or strong sexual/political content, a lot of people are and if those who strongly dislike this forum outnumber the people who like it, I am going to be forced to close it. I wouldn't like that though as there's really some great discussions going on in here from time to time.

    Thanks,
    Johan
