How does one justify referring to others as "dumb" when he cannot even spell such a simple word as "blatantly"?  Big grin

Anyways, to answer your question:
a combination of preparation, opportunity, and circumstance-- also the same reason that many brilliant people are "poor".

Personally I'm much more interested in why so many brilliant people are poor.

Since I can't be dumb I could at least be rich.

Most of the rich get born that way, so it usually comes down to luck I guess.

September11,
That's a dangerous combination -- rich and dumb. Quite frankly, it terrifes me.  Laugh out loud

Maybe I'm placing too much emphasis on a person's financial success to sum them up as a whole. I noticed since the "You need 3 jobs in the USA!?!" thread, a lot of emphasis is put on a person's financial wealth and work ethic to judge what kind of person they are.

That's the keyword -- work-ethic: Anyone who is dedicated to become a better person has some type of work ethic. Regardless of whether we're talking about Mother Theresa, or Trump.

Then there's the dumb tax; the lottery. That's where a lot of simple people get too rich, too fast. As I said...rich, dumb people scare me.

I'll buy a lottery ticked every few months for the heck of it, but I consider myself more lazy than dumb.  Big grin

We all make them rich... when we listen to overpriced Britney Spears music, pay for front row seats at a Tyson fight, pay for season tickets to Lakers games, Go see a Yankees game, watch a Ben Affleck film, etc. etc.

The list can go on forever. And if the stupid people don't get the millions of dollars we dish out, then their old, fat, ugly distributors get yet another multi-million dollar windfall.

I wish I were dumb supermodel, then I could just slip on a pair of Calvins and watch the millions roll in while my gold-digger girlfriend gets her fixes at the bathroom vanity.

Well ConcordeBoy you look at many of the professional athletes and they are usually very smart. To even get to that point I believe they had to have substantial grades, especially if they went to college. Also Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, I don't think they are that stupid. We have one of the smartest investors in the World and one of the smartest business men in the world.

If you are an excellent athlete, you can get basically a free pass through school. You definitely don't have to do much in high school, and in college you just have to take the fluff courses to get by. And as we see by the Maurice Clarett scandal, the pro-caliber athletes get even more help. Just saying they went to college does not make them smart. Just watch some interviews with pro athletes; many of them don't even speak proper English.

Oh geeze...thats a big can of worms you opened. Lets just say a little extra 'help' and favoritism is used in the admissions and academic career of many collegiate athletes. Widespread corruption really- and I dont think there is a right answer either. College athletics is such a big $$$ business for the universities, yet the athletes don't see a dime (theoretically). If your star quarterback is gonna lead your school to a 15 MILLION dollar BSC bowl, but is failing classes- what would you do?

Also Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, I don't think they are that stupid.

No shit?

Yes well look at Shaq, Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant, Rasheed Wallace, Warren Sapp, Tom Brady, T.O., all of the coaches and many other professional athletes. They are highly intelligent, as you can tell when they are interviewed. They rarely say uh, or pause for that matter.

Rasheed Wallace, Warren Sapp

If flapping your mouth to market yourself as a far superior athlete to what you really are or get 40 technical fouls in a season to get on sportscenter frequently and make a name for yourself classifies as intelligence, then sure.

"Dumb", as I applied it, doesn't refer to lack of basic education or even intelligence per se: it can also mean incredibly naive, overly trusting, or just plain green.

My reference to pro players was because they're a prime example of such greenhorns: they often go from never having 20bucks at their disposal to having 20million...... and there are predators who sit around just WAITING for such a case to present itself, if you know what I'm sayin'.
