I served in Vietnam with a guy who'd arrived in country on March 1st 1968. Our tour of duty was 365 days, so your DEROS (...return from overseas) was one year less a day from the day you arrived. One night we had this guy convinced that his DEROS was February 29th as that was the day before he arrived. This meant that he was going to have to stay until 1972.
