I have two nephews and all they ever want off Uncle lee for birthdays and Christmas are Playstation 2 games. These things cost a fortune. I am permanently sknt after having to buy these for them all the time.

I try to buy used Xbox games whenever possible to save a few bucks. Now the $19.99 one I have no problem buying, but the $49.99 ones, I do. I've bought a few in the past (not really bought as I traded other games for store credit, which I then used to buy those games), but tend to stick with buying titles under $30, which are usually the Xbox Platinum titles or are used copies.
I've even gotten that way with games for my computer. $50 for a game that I might not even play a half dozen times, no thank you.

They are expensive but so worth it!
I just placed my order for Gran Turismo 4 and the new Force Feedback Wheel and it cost me £115 for it! A lot of £££ but i will get so much enjoyment from it that i think it is worth it.
Console games can be found a lot cheaper online btw. I regurly get two games for £50 and i never pay more than £30 for any game unless it is special! Like GT4!

Play.com and Amazon offer the latest PS2 titles for £29.99 including delivery, that's where I get my games from. Still not cheap but better than the prices quoted in the high street stores.
I've also bought pre owned games before now, you can get some good bargains on e-bay for these.

Forget getting PS games at retail (usually $50). I buy them at Amazon or e-bay for at least $30-$35, if not less.

I'm just waiting for Halo 2 to come out on PC. I had an unhealthy dose of it on a roommate's Xbox earlier in the year and held myself back, got too into it too fast.
Since I don't have an Xbox, I'm looking at US$200 just to play a game I may finish within a week...that ain't happenin.

My understanding is that the PS2 and X-box are loss leaders for their respective companies. I remember reading that Microsoft took a $200 hit on every X-box.
It supposedly takes something like 6 games sales before they make it back up. After that...pure profit.
