I am curious to know what your opinions are on this subject.

A friend of mine who is 19 and female wants to go to LA for three days on her own. I have no problem with it, i just have issues with her safety as she means a great deal to me.

What would you lot feel???

Chris

Los Angeles has some bad areas, just like any other city, but the chances that she'll become a crime victim are rather slim. She should be okay.
Now, a separate issue is transportation. At 19 she'll be too young to rent a car, and mass transit in Los Angeles, while not as bad as sometimes thought, is somewhat limited.

Seriously Chris...

It depends on two things....

Where she wants to visit...

... and what time of day it is.

Downtown LA- don't bother, if you want a cosmopolitan downtown feel go to San Fran or NYC. If it's a must.... go during the day only-- it won't last long!

Hollywood - (nowhere north of Hollywood Blvd yet nowhere south of Sunset Blvd and certainly not after dark) !-- unless she's in the entertainment district -actually West Hollywood, on the Sunset Strip- where the Key Club, SkyBar and many other clubs are... but she's 19.. she ain't gettin' in anyay.. but be she'd very safe walking that area even past 2 am!

Also Hollywood- heading east... if you go past to Vine St... okay Gower, you've gone to far and are on your own. Heading west... you can't go wrong --all the way out to the Pacific Ocean (about 4-5 miles)

Beverly Hills- safe around the clock -- but she'd better have a BIG credit card.

Westwood/UCLA-- safe around the clock.

Santa Monica -- very safe and place she's most likely to really enjoy [the 3rd Street Promenade in particular with the beach 3 blocks away] head south of that towards Venice Beach safe during the day -- scary for her or any woman not acclimated to the area at night.

None of the above can be reached by the Metro.

All the above are the primary Touristy Areas outside of the normal Universal Studios/Park/ Magic Mountain schlep... seriously have her look at a map and get to know where she may be at all times .. this place is way too big to be completely reliant on public transportion and no sense of direction!

She'd be safe as long as she can tell which areas are good. However, why would she want to roam around alone? I would be bored personally.

If she uses basic common sense, she'll be fine. It's one thing to be walking around Santa Monica, Westwood, Newport Beach, or Malibu at night, it's another to be walking around Long Beach or Downtown at night. I wouldn't really recommend Hollywood at night either, it can get a little bit sketchy at night.

Even Long Beach is fine if you are at the Marina or Downtown. But yes, the only part of Hollywood that is safe 24/7 is the Hollywood/Vine area by the Kodak Theater.

Seriously though Chris, you should just go with her. Seeing a new place is more fun when you're with somebody else.

I think your friend would be safe enough here if she stayed in a decent neighborhood and avoided a few well-known marginal areas. That said, I'd have a hard time recommending LA as a place to visit for three days if you're on your own, don't know anyone, and don't have a car. The distances between points of interest are substantial, and our walk-around shopping areas (Santa Monica, Westwood, etc.) aren't so thrilling that I'd come here just to visit them. We've got a number of interesting cultural and historical sites, but without a car seeing them is almost unmanageable.

If she were coming with a friend, knew people who lived here, was coming for a conference or some main event, or had some access to a car, it would make more sense. Outside that, the only thing I'd recommend for a three-day tourist would be to stay near Disneyland and take in the park, or bypass L.A. altogether and visit San Diego. What's the inspiration for her trip?

Hope this helps,
Leanne

By LA, I am assuming you're referring to Los Angeles and not the state of Louisiana, right?

She'll be fine. As someone else mentioned, just tell her to use her common sense. If she sees an area or gets into a situation she thinks she should leave, then leave. Make sure she carries a cell phone and takes whatever steps are necessary with her carrier, should there be any, to make sure it's operational in the US.

The transportation concern is valid being that our public transit system in the greater L.A. area leaves a lot to be desired. Have her call Avis Rental Car (1-800-230-4898) as they do rent to customers under the age of 21 at some of their locations for an addition charge (I think it's $110).

She'll be able to pack plenty of sightseeing and touristy stuff into the short amount of time she'll be here. For stuff to do, this is a pretty good site http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio...vities-Los_Angeles_California.html

And, last but not least, God forbid, but if she does get into a situation she's not comfortable with, instruct her not to hesitate to call 9-1-1 and ask for help. We're extremely patient with tourists.

Forget LA...why not Orange County?

Irvine Spectrum.....Newport....Huntington....all have plenty to do, and are a helluva lot safer at night than just about anywhere in LA. Although being under 21, the night life is slim pickin's.

I'd invite her out to the Inland Empire/Riverside area, but there isn't a whole lot-even for us 31 year olds to do out here.

Have to agree with everyone, it all depends on where she goes and who she is going with. I do not reccomend it though, as L.A. is a crazy city with a lot of crime.

Hmm, a British 19 yearold alone in LA, either she's a starving actress or she's up to no good. Just buy a travel book at your local bookstore and she will be fine. Just remember, it might be hard to believe, but public transportation is almost non existent in LA and she can't rent a car.

Spoken like someone who'd hasn't a clue what to do here.. or where to go... yeah... listen to this guy..

Irvine Spectrum.....Newport....Huntington....all have plenty to do, and are a helluva lot safer at night than just about anywhere in LA. Although being under 21, the night life is slim pickin's.

It's safe.. but no 'safer' than why I laid out above. This suggestion is 'okay' if 'Plain Jane' settings are your thing... in other words if you like everything cookie-cuttered and Disney-ized...this is perfect.

LA offers fare more excitement, culture, history and top-notch entertainment than anything in Orange County. Yes, parts of it are dangerous, but I think I explained that quite clearly above.

As for those who say why go alone??? More nonsense.. LA is a far safer for a 19 y.o. girl--in described -- safe areas than NYC and many other Metropolis'. And it is one of best places on Earth to explore alone, I see tons of japanese kids, euro-backpackers going solo and taking in the experience without wingmen. The Youth Hostels from the Hollywood Bowl to the prestigious-looking one near the 3rd St Promenade in Santa Monica are great resources for helping young people find their way around town and teaming people up with other foreign travelers... listening to the non-experienced or poorly experienced naysayers is exactly how one should NOT go through life!

These 'crying crime babies' watch WAY too much FOX News and toss every shooting/killing in La Mirada, Whittier, Downey, LaHabra and Van Nuys squarely on LA and don't have clue where these places are (nor how far away).. and it just becomes one and the same to them. All I can say is thank god, I went to all the places I've been without consulting most of the people on this board... these people are either certified nuts or outright egregiously misinformed with these comments or just scared to death to step outside there door... I can see them at the corner of 42nd Street & 9th Ave in NYC at sunset... they'd piss their pants-- and that's not even Harlem or the Bronx!

I'd invite her out to the Inland Empire/Riverside area, but there isn't a whole lot-even for us 31 year olds to do out here

Got that right...

As far as a car is concerned I would not do it on day 1 (unless you are a road demon where you live...) then you'll manage just fine. If you have a GOOD sense of direction.. pick your markers/bearings and take it from there... the next day.. you'll be ready for a car.

Set her up with BN747 and she'll be in good hands.

What the hell you trying to do...that's some serious borderline sh*t!!! JK Sup'fly... but I 'do' the tour guide thing for very special people and trust me... to do it right is a helluva task! And doing right is the only way to do it AFAIK!

I think the info I supplied is more than enough... it's more than I knew when I 1st foot out here!

Safety wise, she won't get in trouble as long as she doesn't stray into certain places at certain times of the day.

She also shouldn't go to a club alone and drink too much.

The problem with LA is that public transportation sucks!!!! I realized that my freshman year at USC 2001-2002 when I had to use the bus and subway.

It's not LA's fault. Los Angeles is a huge city...it is difficult to figure out what to do to public transportation.

Anyway, other Angelinos have responded quite fully, so I'll leave my post at this!
