Ann Coulter: Helen Thomas Is "An Old Arab"

..."and because of this, she is a security threat to President George W. Bush."

http://www.freep.com/news/politics/thomas8e_20050308.htm

For most of Helen Thomas' 60-plus years in White House journalism, her Arab ethnicity was never an issue.

But in a recent column, political commentator Ann Coulter writes about the controversy over whether it's too easy to get media access to the White House.

"Press passes can't be that hard to come by if the White House allows that old Arab Helen Thomas to sit within yards of the president," wrote Coulter, who once argued the United States should invade Muslim countries and "convert them to Christianity."

Coulter's comments in her Feb. 23 column have sparked concern from metro Detroit's Arab-American communities and 26 U.S. members of Congress, led by U.S. Rep. John Dingell, a Dearborn Democrat.

Asked about her background, Thomas, 84, said "I'm an American: I'm not hyphenated. But I was very lucky to grow up in two cultures."

Thomas was raised on Detroit's east side by Christian immigrants from Lebanon. She graduated from Wayne State University and went on to become a pioneer for women in journalism.

What I don't get is why you people bother to quote Ann Coulter.
Or Ward Churchill

. . . or any other one-trick pony who makes millions off your political gullibilities.

Whatever happened to "ignore them, they'll go away?"

Ask morons like Bravo7E7 who think she is a credible political commentator.

Coulter is an embarassment to a supposedly civilised nation and damages the USA every time she opens her vile mouth. In that respect she is the security risk.

This airhead has been surgically extricated from one of the country's premier right wing rags - The National Review - for being a bigot. I guess they found her certifiable too.

She is now reduced to baying on trashy internet uber right wing sites. If she didn't have a Linda Blair moment every time she had something to say, who would even notice her in the plethora of internet noise.

Any woman reduced to defending that fake journalist Gannon (I guess crazy Annie decided to save her anti-gay venom for another day) over Helen Thomas who has been a fearless REAL White House journalist is desperate for attention.

Spot on. It's just the mentality of "we should convert them to Christianity" that makes radical Muslims hate Americans. Why does everyone want everyone else to be just like them? WTF is that all about?

If the persistent rumors about Ann Coulter are to be believed, your sentence should read:
"In that respect he is the security risk"  laughing

I'm no fan of Ann Coulter, but to be fair, her comment about "invade Arab countries and convert them to Christianity" is always taken completely out of context.

What she really said at that speech was something like "Al-Qaeda's hatred of the U.S. and the West, and their total intolerance of our way of life, are akin to the U.S. saying we should invade Arab countries and convert them to Christianity."

For the record, please make note of this.

Sure, Helen has been sitting in on White House Press Conferences forever and ever, Amen, and all of a sudden, she's a security risk, because Axis Ann finds out she's part Arab?  Silly

All Axis Ann's diatribes is to inflame the bigots and racists who make up the extreme right wing of the Republican party. Axis Ann would love nothing better than to whack old Helen.

Ann's problem is she want to make this not only a "war on Terror", but a war on Islam, on Arabs, on non-Christians all over the world. She's no better than Josef Goebbles was in his prime.

Nice try, but no dice.

This is what she said. Its also what got her fired from the National Review.

Thanks for finding that, Jaysit. I had thought it was something like what's in the article you posted, but NYCFlyer sounded so convincing, I began to doubt myself. I'd personally like to shove this slag into a woodchipper.

Ann coulter is a disgusting waste of human life. I agree JGPH1A 100 percent. She has no right to say such bigoted things. I dont know where that woman grew up, or how she got into what seems like the KKK, but she needs to learn some respect.

The worst thing is not that she says this, but that she still has a voice on major media outlets. For example, you will often see Fox News using her as a voice on their shows. Or where was this column published? What self respecting media outlet would dare print her column? Her views are as racist and hateful as we've seen in a long time, and yet still some consistently publish her stuff.

I'm not talking about squashing her freedom of speech, she has the right to say whatever she wants. However, there is a certain journalistic moral standard and journalistic ethic which should tell newspapers and other media sources not to publish racist and hateful material. That's the sad thing.

From the webpage: "The syndicate distributes Coulter's column to about 100 newspapers"... damn, 100 newspapers??

Interesting figure that might alarm Miss Coulter, but the majority of Arabs in the US are Christian, and the majority of Muslims in the US are African American, not Arab.

That is not how she said it on Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect." She said, "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity." That is EXACTLY how she said it on the show.

I think Ann needs a brain transplant, or maybe get laid. That she is a darling of the 'Conservatives' is an insult to them as well. FoxNews loves her anti-Democrat hate speech/GWB ass kissing attitude, as do more than a few Americans. Ann Coulter will never rise to the level of respect that Helen Thomas has. Ms. Thomas was never afraid to ask probing, well prepared questions to a number of Presidents for years at White House Press conferences. Until GWB all of the Presidents she covered - Democrats and Republicans - almost always let her ask a question at White House press conferences as they knew she would ask relevant, well phrased questions on important issues. She really left covering White House press conferences for various reasons, including her advancing age, but also that she didn't like GWB, and he wouldn't ask her questions. Also, also departed when UPI, whom she reported for many with, was purchsed by an organization connected with the Rev. Sun Yung Moon (Moonies/Unification Church/Washington Times) If Ann were there, she would be like a 'plant', only asking leading questions that made W look good.

Banco are you lucky.

Personally I think Anne Coulter must smoke a bushel-full of pot and then make up outrageous right-wing things to say to see what she can get away with.

I imagine her calling up Tommy Chong and saying "Dude, you won't believe what they let me say on Fox, man!"

There was a post on this forum a few weeks back when she said something really stupid about Canada and Vietnam. You should have seen the "deer in the headlights" look when the interviewer gently corrected her. Priceless!!!!!!
