Back in my college days, the staple snack used to be the Vada Pav from the vendor on platform 3 at Marine Lines station. He used to always do a fresh batch at around 330pm, just in time to grab a piping hot vada with the crispy batter still dripping with oil, shove it into the pav with his patented chutney blend and hop onto the 332pm Virar fast. Yumm.......

Just one small query. What the hell is Vada Pav? Do you eat it, stick it on your head, sit on it, worship it or just look at it?

Sorry chaps, you lost this old codger.  confused

I've never had it. The only Indian food I've had was two bags of Mung Dal a friend kept for me from her trip on Air India. That was good, though, and I'd like to try some real Indian food next time.

It was Vada Sultenfuss.

You don't get Indian fast food here in DC. The only place you get that stuff is in the NY/NJ area.

Pity.
I miss vada pav, bhel puri, and those tomato, cucumber and chutney sandwiches they sell on the streets.

Delicious topic, MELBig grin

I love Vada-Pav. Droool!! One of the best vada-pav used to be outside Chabildas High School near Dadar station. It's been over 10 years since I have had that stuff. We do get decent vada-pav in Chicago at Kamdar Plaza at Devon Avenue. But of course it doesnt hold a candle to the freshly made stuff on the streets of Mumbai.

I can't wait to eat excellent authentic vada-pav when I visit Mumbai next.

Where's Elco market Karan?

BTW, what's your fav South Indian place in Matunga. Me, I swear by Anand Bhuvan (at King's Circle)... used to go there all the time when we were at VJTI. Is it still there? Also, New Madras Cafe used to be awesome. Is that still there or gone?

Elco Arcade is a seedy mall for cheap women's fashions located on Hill Road in Bandra.

More importantly, they have the world's greatest panipuriwala located right outside, appropriately with neon sign proclaiming "Elco Panipuriwala".

Quoting 22right (Reply 22):

Can't speak for Matunga, but in my college days at Xaviers we used to swear by a place called Rajmahal located just off the Metro cinema junction on the way to Kalbadevi Post Office.

Hmmmm. Must try it sometime. Though, honestly, I am too sissy to eat Pani-puri from the roadside vendors when I visit India these days. Since I am only there for 2 or 3 weeks at a time, I am usually too paranoid about ruining my vacation through some water-borne infection. Everything else (such as vada-pav, pav-bhaji, etc) is fair game, but the "pani" component of Pani-puri makes me too nervous. One of these trips I will take the plunge though (or rather have the pani-puri vendor's hand take the plunge with my puri into the matka of pani)
