Just seen the video starring Peter Kay for the first time and it is indeed absolutly hilarious
What are your thoughts on this comical masterpiece?
BTW, the singer, Tony Christie last night performed in front of 450 people in Dundee

Its Amarillo!

Peter Kay, local legend round here. This song has been played at Bolton Wanderers games for months now and also they play it after concerts at the MEN Arena. Absolute class cheesey song, never thought i'd end up in a club singing along to this, everyone loves it!

Sha la la la la la la la!

I have a few problems with that song

Why does he need to ask the way?
Didn't he and sweet marie come from there?
Say Sweet Marie has moved there whilst he's been in nick. Wouldn't she have given him directions when it got near the time for him to get out?
many people in prison have literacy problems, maybe he has, but surely he would have got someone to help him with his letters., otherwise how would he know sweet marie had flitted to Amarillo.
Say sweet marie hasn't been sending him letters. Well he's setting himself up for heartbreak and a possible descent back into crime.

The Texas correction department is notoriously harsh. I can't see them giving prisoners pillows.

OK here is the way to Amarillo from Peter Kay's (and my) hometown of Bolton

From the Manchester Evening News

We worked it out that to travel from Peter's home in Bolton to the Texas city made famous by the song would cost about £1,250.

Step one would be to start at Bolton bus station in the town centre and take the 571 to the Thynne Street-Bridgeman Street junction. A three-minute walk would then take you to Bolton railway station, where you can catch a Northern train to Manchester Airport.

At the airport, there are no direct flights to Amarillo. The simplest way to make connecting flights would be to fly to Las Vegas, from Las Vegas to Dallas and then on to Amarillo.

US Airways' flight US 197 will take almost 10 hours to fly from Manchester to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport.

From there, American Airlines offers 20 flights a day to Dallas Fort Worth Airport, which is a 50-minute journey. And from Dallas Fort Worth, American Airlines offers 15 flights a day to Amarillo International Airport, which leaves you just a $15 (£7) cab trip away from downtown Amarillo.

They did this with Simon Calder this morning on Radio 5 Live. By a combination of coach, Air India flight to Chicago from LHR, and Greyhound bus, he reckoned it could be done for about £450. Oh and about 50 hours of your life.  Wink

But he also said on Radio 2 not to bother going there 'cause there's nothing to see (except for the Cadillac Ranch) he reckoned that Austin would be a better bet. However Sweet Marie isn't waiting in Austin, she's in Amarillo!

Sha la la lala lalala

When the day is dawningon a Texas Sunday morning
how I long to be there
with Marie who's waiting for me there
every lonely city where I hang my hat
ain't as half as pretty as where my baby's at

Is this the way to Amarillo
every night I've been hugging my pillow
dreaming dreams of Amarilloand sweet Marie who waits for me
show me the way to Amarillo
I've been weeping like a willow
crying over Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la lala lalala Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala and Marie who waits for me

There's a church bell ringing
hear the song of joy that it's singing
for the sweet Mariaand the guy who's coming to see her
just beyong the highway, there's an open plain
and it keeps me going through the wind and rain

Is this the way to Amarillo

Because He did what he did for Maria (another Tony Christie cheesy classic):

Sunrise this is the last day that i ll ever see out in the court yard there
ready for me but i go to my lord with no fear cos i did what i did for
maria.

As i road in to town with the sun going down all the windows were
barred there was no one around for they that i'd come with my hand
on my gun and revenging my heart for maria my dearestdeparting
maria

Take an eye for an eye and a life for a life and somebody must die
for the death of my wife yes i did what i did for maria i did what did
for maria

Laughter echoed across from the end of the street there was the man
i was burning to meet but my mind was so calm and so clear as i
took my revenge for maria and he fell to the ground raising dust all
but i know he was died long before he went down it was quick it was
clean made it easy on him which is more when he did for maria
when he did what he did for maria.

The true anthem of Amarillo:

'Amarillo By Morning' by George Strait

Amarillo by morning
Up from San Antone
Everything that I've got
Is just what I've got on
When that sun is high
In that Texas sky
I'll be bucking at the county fair
Amarillo by morning
Amarillo I'll be there

They took my saddle in Houston
Broke my leg in Sante Fe
Lost my wife and a girlfriend
Somewhere along the way
Well I'll be looking for eight
When they pull that gate
And I'm hoping that
Judge ain't blind
Amarillo by morning
Amarillo's on my mind

Amarillo by morning
Up from San Antone
Everything that I've got
Is just what I've got on
I ain't got a dime
But what I've got is mine
I ain't rich
But Lord I'm free
Amarillo by morning
Amarillo's where I'll be

Amarillo by morning
Amarillo's where I'll be
