So the first episode just finished on BBC1, what did you think? Personally I didn't think it was so bad, a good laugh at least.

I never watched much of the original series but I guess a few oldies will no doubt say that was the best one and this new series doesn't compare. Well it does but it's crap?

Oh and what did you think of Billie Piper? Hmmm  Wink

"I just wanted to say thanks."
"For what?"
"Exactly."

Great line  Smile

My mate just texted me saying it was shit. I thought it was alright, i've never really been into Dr Who. Shame we didn't see the Darliks tonight. I do like the fact that the Doctor is played by a Manc, pure class!

I didn't think it was that brilliant, but it was the first episode and it may take time to get going, given how they're effectively having to start again.

The one thing that surprised me a little was that the dialogue seemed a bit stilted. The writer, Russell T Davies, is one of the best in the business, and I did expect a bit better.

Still, I thought the last revival, with Paul McGann, was really good; dark and gloomy, but people didn't seem to like that style too much.

It's got a whole series to develop, so give it time, I suppose.

I thought it was good.....well at least as good as can be expected from British Sci-Fi. The daleks wont be in for a while. episode 6 i think and even then its just one dalek. The season is planned to end with a big dalek invasion!!

Loved the end bit when she ran towards the tardis with the theme tune playing!

I stopped watching when Tom Baker finished, and I was growing out it by then, they should have maybe dumped it then.
By all accounts, though I never saw them, it was pretty shit in the 80's, with the already small budgets going the same way as viewing figures, down year on year.
However, every year since 1989, the most complaints to the BBC, every year, no matter what else is happening, is about Dr Who getting axed.

Never saw the one off in 96, apparently too mid Atlantic, Dr Who should always be a uniquely British take of Sci Fi, as it was at it's best.

As a child in the 70's, Dr Who was disturbing stuff alright, by making the mundane seem threatening, like tonight when they resurrected the Autons (SP?), now of course they have much better technology and a decent budget.

I think Eccelston was good, as was Billie (be fair, she's already received acting plaudits for a chaucher play update and a dark one off play about being brought up in care), She was good, yeah she's partly eye candy, but I've never really fancied her, really!

Russell Davis is a top notch writer, (quote; 'The Daleks will be able to fly like bastards'), which how Ecceleston got on board, he has to set a lot up in the first episode and it's still really a kids show, (with plenty including in jokes for adults too), I thought it was fast paced and well done, though one British based American critic moaned 'it won't travel'.

Who's sick of hearing that? Won't travel? Good, if the result is to pander to middle America, which let's face it, is getting so far away from us culturally it will soon be easier to sell programmes to Iran!
(Though I suspect BBC America will do good business with Dr Who at their core, targeted audience).

Blimey! That was quick! Based on a single episode, too.

It's good to hear about series 2 although I'm not entirely sure how good series 1 is yet...

They should get Chris Evans in as one of the baddies for the new episodes.  Wink

Well I've read several reviews on the new series, and to be honest most of them are positive. I will have to wait however until Tuesday the 5th of April to see it here in Canada, and I can't wait!

I hope I will be impressed, I am a big fan of the original series...

Favourite Doctor: Jon Pertwee
Favourite villain: Sutekh from Pyramids of Mars
Favourite Story: The Daemons

I guess I'll just have to wait and see!

That's true. I was a little surprised by quite how positive they were, to be honest. I do think there's a lot of good stuff there to work with, and that the opening episode was very much a scene setter, so it definitely deserves a chance to settle in.

Equally, I do have quite a lot of faith in the writer, Russell T Davies, so I'm sure it'll improve.

One thing I didn't know was that the early reference to the Doctor having been at the Kennedy assassination was an in-joke to the real fanatics, as the very first episode in 1963 was delayed by 17 minutes when Kennedy was shot.

Oh, don't worry. That thing about Kennedy was a little aside that has no relevance whatsoever to the plot. That's why I didn't get the reference, and unless you are a complete Doctor Who nut, neither would you. So I thought I'd explain that one line!

Hey Charles. Basically in the first episode, the world explodes and everyone moves to Mars via the Tardis just before hand.

It's a good episode.  Smile

Don't tell me let me guess. Douglas Adams wrote this episode. Has the good doctor exchanged the Tardis for leather book that says "Don't panic" on the front?  Wink
