Due to the condition of Prince Rainier who has been in hospital since 7 March and was taken into intensive care a week ago the palace said Prince Albert would take over as his father was no longer able to exercise his royal functions.
Prince Rainier, who is being treated for heart, lung and kidney problems, came to the throne in 1949 and is one of Europe's longest reigning monarchs.
The health updates from doctors at the hospital this week have not been optimistic, with reports that the prognosis was pretty bad although his state is fragile
Prince Albert, 47, is the only son of Prince Rainier and his late wife, American actress Grace Kelly.
He is not married and has no children...which is a major source of concern in the country
A man without the knowledge of his past history, culture and origins is like a tree without roots

I don't believe Al's single status is of as much concern as it was in the past. In an interview with him that I saw last year, he said that Monaco's constitution has been amended to allow the children of female heirs continue the monarchy. Therefore, if Albert dies childless, Caroline's or Stephanie's children can inherit the throne.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

Yeah way to go some of you. Geez, have some respect for them will you? Some of your comments are quite offensive.

No, it isn't. Monaco's constitution has been changed so that even if Albert never has children he can nominate a successor. It is unlikely that Princess Caroline would become sovereign, it is far more likely that her eldest son - Andrea Casiraghi would take over.

Princess Stephanie's children are not in the line of succession.
Quoting RootsAir (Reply 2): ...what I meant is that there is a polemic on whether he's gay or not...this is NOT meant to be an anti gay thread
Let me assure you, there is little doubt in Monaco as to the Prince's sexuality. He is all Grimaldi I assure you.
This is a very sad situation and I pray that His Serene Highness returns to full health.
