The highest ranking Cardinals are Bishops of which there are only nine. If bishops are more likely to be elected pope than ordinary Priest Cardials (of which there are 117) then a third of these high rankers are Arabs and have a good chance of becoming Pope. No Arab candidates have been touted though, but does anyone really have a good idea of who is in the running anyway. Do Bishops have a better chance?

there are very few Arab Catholics. They won't choose an Arab Pope because an Arab Catholic does not represent Arab Christians, most of whom are Orthodox. This is unlike Latin Americans, where the vast majority are Catholic, and a Latin Pope would represent most Latin Americans.

So Latin American pope?

Nasrallah Sfeir, the Patriach of the Maronite Church of Lebanon, is on the Council of Cardinals but I think he is too old...he is born in 1920, making himi about the same age as John Paul II.

Quoting TACAA320 (Reply 3): Highly improbable. The next will be an Italian. That's my guess. Probably the Milano Archbishop.
I don0't know what this with there havind to be imperatively an italian pope. Ok Tettamanzi knows perfectly the vatican and has the potential of taking over the pontif task with success. But he speaks no other language than Italian !
A Latino pope would be the ideal because they represent the biggest catholic population on earth and to my belief amongst the most piet and would be excellent for getting closer north/south like John Paul II did with east/west.
I would love Oscar Andrés Rodriguez Maradiaga to become the next pope

An Italian is rather likely. After such a prolific pontiff as JP2, the Vatican will probably pick an Italian in his 70s as a transitional guy. There might be a second one of those characteristics, then you'll probably see a Latin American pope. An American pope is unlikely not because that hypothetical pope would be accepted but because the American Catholic Church is in shambles. Between the sex scandals and disbelief in the doctrine, the Catholic church is losing millions of followers in the US. It was never dominant here, and its influence is waning. In 50 years I don't believe the Catholic church will be of importance in the US.

But are Cardinal Bishops more likely to be elected does anyone know? Do they really care where he's from? What about a Scottish Pope, Cardinal Keith O'Brien of Edinburgh is high up in the running apparently.

Quoting SFOMEX (Reply 6): Why not? I'm sure most Catholics are so open mind in this area that they would even accept an American Pope.
I am going to have to respectfully disagree on these grounds:
The religion that made a guy kill himself because they couldn't swallow the idea of the earth revolving around the sun is really open minded.
Don't say that was then this is now.. It was the 1990s (1996 I think) before they admitted they were wrong.
Some have said the Catholic church played a signifigant part in Christopher Columbus having to seek support from Spain instead of Italy, because if he proved the earth was round that was going to fly directly in the face of the church. Sounds accepting to me.
Many Catholic scholars call taking birth control pills a "daily unconscious abortion" and they go onto say that no matter what the reason for actually taking them, taking them is a sin. I don't have the book in front of me but that is straight out of one of the Theology textbooks from one of the classes my girlfriend had to take at St. Marys University, A Catholic school. That sounds really accepting.
The Church is also strongly opposed to Gay marriage, that isn't accepting.
So no, I don't see an American Pope in our lifetimes, As long as they preserve the good ol boys network in the Vatican expect more of the same backwards views on things with no hope of change for another millenium, assuming there still is a Catholic Church in another millenium.

Of course there will be! You underestimate the potency of the original church. It will continue to evolve. Old conservative men are responsible for the slowness of the church to respond effectively to current issues such as birth control and HIV. People tend to make up their minds on fundamental issues when they are reasonably young and as they get older they become more conservate/stuborn reflecting an opinion formed decades ago in different times. The world has changed immensely since JP2 was young and his opinions about some things were very outdated. But it may only take one progressive who has kept an open mind through the years to make the church catch up with today.

God willing, we won't have an arab or black pope. I don't think either one of those nationalities really represent the majority of the Catholics. The most appropriate would either be Italian or Hispanic.

Damn dude, you're just striking out left and right tonight!!!
You know, I always thought that the church's purpose was to promote the savior for ALL of humanity... not just a select race or creed. I mean honestly... a black person does not "really respresent" the word of god? A black or middle-eastern guy couldn't talk to god as effectively as an Italian????
And what about say... a black Italian? Or in your mind, do they just simply not exist?
I never realized there was a sign on the Vatican door reading, "Blacks or Arabs need not apply."

No no, I was talking about the MAJORITY OF THE CATHOLICS. If you look at the numbers, the majority of the catholic religion is composed of italians, hispanics, and phillipino. I dont have anything against blacks or arabs, I just dont think they should lead the catholic religion because they don't represent the majority of the people that make up the religion.

Again... I never realized the Catholic Church placed emphasis on a color or creed. If I was African or Arab, I'd be offended if the Church said, "Sorry, this job isn't for you because there are more of us than you."
What the hell does it matter what color their skin is!? What does it matter if they came from Italy, Spain, Mexico or the Congo?
Tell me... does someone from Italy speak to god for effectively than someone from Cote d'Ivorie? If you all pray to the same god, believe in the same values and have the same hopes and dreams... does skin color/nationality even matter?
You should ditch that arrogant, racist attitude and listen to what your religion is teaching: You're all of the same religion, that's all that truly matters.
