I am sure some of you will make fun of me for posting this, but it's rather important to me and millions of Canadians and a few people of other nationalities.  Smile

Randy Ferbey's team from Canada is not doing so well! They are currently 5 and 3 when they should really have no more than one loss. David Nedohin is NOT curling up to his normal standards. 74% this morning over Italy. What's going on?

Ferbey should be okay to make it into the playoffs, but it's not guaranteed, and that's very unusual.

So who else is watching / paying attention? There is live scoring on the Internet at http://www.curling.ca/championships/live_scoring/worlds_2005.asp and some good articles at http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Curling/home.html.

We are having a special event at our club Sunday morning to watch the final game. I am sure we'll have tons of people there all yelling at the TV. Now let's just hope Randy Ferbey will be one of the teams playing!

New Zealanders - your guys are doing very well and just might earn themselves a berth into the Olympics! And the Americans are doing very well too. They are also fighting to do well enough to get into the Olympics.

What channel do you get Curling on? I watched it a couple of weeks ago on CBC, and its on tonight too at 11 I think (Eastern time). Do you watch it on a specific sports channel?

April....This is terribly fascinating and I for one appreciate you bringing it to my attention.

Is there a book you can recommend to me about this intricate and demanding sport?

OK...a couple of questions Hey...what do you call those brooms they use to sweep ahead of the giant hockey puck/bass boat anchor they slide across the ice? Is this like a giant game of boules, only on ice?

That's, like, the whole population of Canada....right?

Hope all is well and that you guys get melted by June this year.

What, do you live in a cave?

Curling is essentially ice shuffleboard without the beer. It's actually quite interesting. I'd like to try it sometime.

Somebody slides a stone along the ice toward a target, attempting to score points and/or knock competitor's stones out of the target area. Oh, and two others move along with the stone directing the stones path by using brooms to move ice chips in or out if its path. Sorry, don't know what anyone is called.

Kieron, now that CBC has all the rights to the games it's kinda messed up. I think the 6 pm Eastern draw is on CBC, but it might be on Country Canada. The 10:30 pm draw is on The Score, if you can believe it - and it's really weird because it's the CBC announcers and it's branded as CBC Sports, but The Score ticker goes along the bottom. Very odd. Main CBC will carry the playoff games.

Thank goodness I have a Canadian satellite dish. Although, watching curling is the exact reason why I got it.

Logan - curling DEFINITELY needs beer. There is much beer (and other alcohol) drinking with curling.

Any of you who are interested can listen in to an audiocast of the Worlds at http://www.usacurl.org/events/05wmcc/audiocast.htm . Right now it says the server is down, but there is no game on until 3 pm Pacific so that might be why. There's a guy named Greg who is an announcer on that audiocast - he's from my club.

Ian - Curling For Dummies is a good place to start. The giant thing sliding across the ice is called a "rock" or a "stone". It's solid granite and weighs 42 pounds. The brooms are called "brooms" or "brushes". The ice has a special surface applied to it which is called "the pebble" and it is bumpy. By sweeping, you melt the pebble slightly, which reduces the friction on the bottom of the rock, and so you can make the rock go farther and straighter. It's called "curling" because you always aim a bit to the side of where you want the rock to end up and spin the rock slightly - and the rock's path bends or "curls" to end up where you want it. It is very much like Boules. Curlers make good lawn bowlers and vice versa.

Many Canadians do watch curling. It's a huge deal for us. 1.5 million Canadians are curlers. There are 1100 curling clubs in Canada. In contrast, the club in Seattle is the only dedicated curling facility west of North Dakota in the States (excluding Alaska).

We'll thaw out at some point, Ian.  Smile

Logan - there is at least one club in the Boston area. Most clubs have times during the year when people can come out and try it.

Main CBC also reruns one of the evening draws at 11:30, I believe.

Personally, for the first time I am NOT cheering for Canada. Randy Ferbey's behaviour is a disgrace, and I'm ashamed to have him representing us. Hopefully this is the last time he represents Canada. Nedohin needs to go off and make his own team. Or better yet, let's just have another province win the Brier next year. I generally cheer for Manitoba.

Since I'm so pissed off at Ferbey, I'm not sure who to cheer for this time 'round. I think maybe the US, because Ferbey disrespected them the most, so I 'd like to see them kick his ass again in a playoff game. Otherwise, though, I suppose I'll cheer from Scotland. They seem like decent fellows. Germany also has been impressive.

By the way, the Canadian Olympic trials in December are going to be very intense. What a great line-up of teams, on both the men's and women's sides.

Too funny Jan! I can attest that sweeping during curling doesn't make you want to sweep your kitchen or anything, though.  Smile

Here's another way to "watch" a game.

http://www.curlingarena.com/#

It looks like they'll have an animated display of the game. Not sure if there's audio commentary, although it looks like there might be.

I should give credit on the photos in reply 5. They are from http://www.worldcurling.org/CurlHome...2004-2005/WCC-M/photos.asp?tid=225 and were taken by Paul Ahlgren.

Jean - you really find Ferbey's behaviour so bad? I find him confident, but not arrogant. I definitely like Rocque and Pfeiffer and I think Nedohin is an amazing curler...usually. Did you like Mark Dacey winning last year? Who else might you like to see win the Brier?

I am not cheering for the US team since Fenson defeated last year's US champs - who are from my club.

You are right, the Olympic trials will be amazing. Did you know that Fenson is the Olympic team for the US? Oddly enough, the US had only one competition to decide this year's US team for the Worlds and the Olympic team as well.

Scarletharlot,

I acknowledge that there can be a thin line between confidence and arrogance, and I guess i'ts a subjective thing. For my personal taste, several of his comments this year have been well, well over the line, and have really embarrassed me. I think the other members of team are really classy, though. Nedohin is amazing, and usually more consistent than he has been this week. I have come to the conclusion that he's actually a robot.

Anyway, I'd like to see Randy Dutiaume from Manitoba come back with a little more consistency next year and take it. I like Mike Harris, too.

By the way, I think the Scott was great this year, better entertainment than the Brier - nice to see someone else win for a change there.

It really was good to see "Lunchbox" Dutiaume. He seemed totally delighted to be at the Brier.

I guess Ferbey's comments haven't struck me as arrogant. One thing that you will see from his comments during the game and what he calls - he plays as if his opponents will make very difficult shots. If Nedohin is a robot he is having some issues this week.  Smile I guess he curled 60% against Italy in the first half of the game! And last night coming up heavy on a draw - what's up with that? That is most unlike him.

Remember last year's Brier when Marcel Rocque threatened the heckler in the stands? What was your take on that? I mostly found it funny...and very human.

I have to admit that I didn't see the Scott.  Sad Jennifer Jones made some amazing shots, didn't she?

She sure did. I think the last shot's video is still available for download on the SBC website.

I actually didn't see any of the Brier last year. The way it usually works out is that the Scott falls on my university reading week, so i can watch the whole thing, but not as much of the other tournaments.

I've ordered the DVD that will have highlights from this year's Scott and Brier. It will be interesting to see if it's worth the money.

Also, maybe the robot works better in cold weather.. Victoria's too balmy! (At least that's what the annoying TV commericals keep telling us).

Here's a cool link...Guy Hemmings throwing a perfect draw in the 1999 Brier.

http://www.curling.ca/learn_and_play/index.asp

Click on "View Our Public Service Announcement Video"

Then click on "Guy Hemmings at the 1999 Brier" (or more accurately, the "300K" beside it). What a shot!! Now THAT is curling. Keep in mind that that rock travelled 120 feet. Guy is a hoot. I think everyone loves Guy.

There's other interesting stuff about curling on that page as well.

....actually, what are rates for pad rentals? Are they close to renting ice time for hockey...about $150.00 / hour?

And can "single" amateur join a team to give it a try or does one need to get a group of people and rent the ice?
