Sources Of Road-rage

I'm a pretty aggressive driver, and I don't usually get upset with slow-pokes or other morons....but there's a trick to keeping sane.

"What's my trick" you ask?
The answer: Avoid Toyota Corollas.

Every time the road is blocked by a car doing half the speed-limit, a Corolla is at the front of the pack. Ever been on a multi-lane hwy and had 2 or 3 cars all driving side-by-side and really slow so you can't pass? I bet they were Corollas, weren't they? That car crawling along the on-ramp...You got it: another Corolla.

I figured out this phenom a couple of years ago, and now all my friends, family and co-workers seem to agree with me. I saw two very near misses on the highway just this morning, and yes, both incidents involved Corollas.

What's your trick? Any other cars to steer clear of?

Well here in SoCal, road-rage is an issue that's taken very seriously. Some people will say that our aggressive drivers are a plus. I would have to disagree. Every day, as I inch my way along the 91 through Riverside, I see the same thing over and over: someone gets right on someones ass. Then locks up their brakes to avoid hitting them. They pin the gas pedal, swerve into the next lane. Gun it. Then slam on their brakes again at the next slow bank. 10 minutes and 5 miles of this yields a net result of maybe three car lengths progress. But meanwhile, your clutch, your brakes, your tranny, and your gas mileage have done down the crapper. I also see people driving 90 down the freeway, continue doing 90 down the exit ramp, and again, lock up their brakes in a cloud of smoke to avoid plowing into a stopped car or entering the intersection.

I just don't get it.

Problem is that while everyone acknowleges that road rage is a problem, no one wants to really do anything about it, other than pass more laws, which in my opinion, will only make it worse:

Jailing someone for flipping the bird will NOT solve road rage.

Doing construction at night, or better yet, NOT taking 4 years to do a 6 month project, synchronizing traffic lights for better flow, WILL eliminate, or at least reduce road rage.

Does this really happen? Learning to drive in the NYC area, flipping the bird is just a way of life. Someone driving like a moron, flip them the bird and pass them. There are so many bad drivers here, it gets you fuming sometimes. My rule: 10 under the limit, it's time for the horn. Hey, it's there for a reason.  Smile

My source of road rage:

They are called Michigan drivers. Angry

My gf and I hate michigan drivers. They ALWAYS go at least 5 under the speed limit, drive down the middle of the parking lot, come to a near complete stop before turning right, park in at least 2 spots in a parking lot, they break for a minute before signaling.

My gf and I just blow by them like they are standing still.  bigthumbsup

Canuckpaxguy: Yep Toyota Corollas are very popular car to be going 35 on a highway. I have noticed this too.

David b: You SUV truck haters are really starting to get annoying. Where are all you guys suddenly coming from. I just started noticing you guys for two months now.

Here in Miami we have all the drivers you can think off. Its not like in most places were the drivers are the same.
Here you have
The really slow 80 year old drivers that see in between the wheel.
The really slow Illegal drivers who are afraid to get a ticket because than they will be deported.
The aggressive BOS or NYC or EZE driver who I prefer I wish everyone just drove like that.
And than you just have your normal bad and normal drivers.

I think the best drivers in the world are Buenos Aires drivers. Man they have skills and are aggressive. That is how I wish everyone drove.

Road rage is a problem. Someone cuts you off you don't need to retaliate. Whatever. And you cut someone off by accident what ever just don't deal with that driver.

I actually think those little people in their Prius's are much more annoying, driving down the highway going 50 mph. The only time the trucks and SUV's bother me is during bad weather when they think they are invincible and pay no attention to safety. And I'm not biased for SUV's here, I drive a freakin' Cabrio.  Wink

interesting.... I hate the SUV's because when they pull out in front of me, I can't see where the hell I'm going... They are typically the ones driving mostly like idiots pulling in and out of traffic, cutting people off all the time, tailgating, all while talking on their DAMN CELL PHONES. Jerks. GRRR. Plus, in Montana (as well as anywhere else in the world), driving an SUV is nothing more than a status symbol. Nothing more. Montana's a pretty poor state - although, the average wealth has increased drastically in the last 10 years with MANY MANY people immigrating here from California (thank you "A River Runs Through It") and WA state (thank you being a very "red" state) - both of which have increased the number of assholes driving 30+mph over the speed limit. Lastly, don't these huge vehicle drivers get it that the oil ISN'T going to last forever??? Not to mention the air we breathe..... And thank you NY for banning driving and talking on cell phones, not that it'll ever happen here. We just FINALLY last week were the 49th state to pass an open container ban - only state left without one now is Mississippi.

Done ranting.

In Washington state it's guaranteed to be a Ford. Mustang, Fairlane, Tortoise, truck. All slow boats out of water. Not worth road raging over though.

Same here. Some folks don't understand that others on the road may have a schedule to adhere to which can be made running the legal speed if the road hogs don't slow them down. I drove commercial motorcoaches for a year and some of our runs put us right at the maximum service hour limits. That's usually the reason that long distance coaches run right at the speed limit whenever possible. Who knows how many cars and trucks I would pass at night on the interstate that were running five to ten below the limit. On the interstate I'd have the bus set right at the governor speed of 70 mph unless heavy traffic required a lower speed.

I can't speak for other Asian drivers, but folks who insist on driving below the speed limit will find me passing them asap. I'm Asian and I don't dilly dally at all. I get up to highway speed and stay there unless safety dictates otherwise. Right now I'm planning a 2000 mile trip for early May. I'll fly into Cincinnati, test drive the Caddy limo I'm seriously considering purchasing and go from there. If I like it, I'll have a 3-4 day drive back to Tucson. If I discover something serious that I don't like, I'll buy a commercial ticket and fly back (I'll be flying out on a private plane). 500+ miles a day is not unusual for me.

Actually it is a plus. Here in the Bay Area, drivers will cut you off and then drive slow. At least in SoCal, when you are cut off, they continue to speed.
Our drivers are too damn passive up here. People drive the speed limit in the fast lane! I don't get it!
What's even dumber people will sit at green lights and let people J-walk in front of them yet people run red lights.

Other terrible drivers are those in BMWs and Mercedes. They really think laws don't apply to them.

Blue Hairs & Hats
The ones that all you see from behind are heads peering out between the wheel and the dash board. I have to turn left in 20 klicks so I'll get in the lane now (driving 15 to 20 under the limit) kind of people.

Anybody yacking on a cell phone, applying make-up, changing clothes/footwear, reading etc (tickets were issued for all of the above this winter in Ottawa).

The thing that 'rages' me are the guys in hopped up Honda Civic, Mustang or BMW, etc, cutting across traffic, slipping into spaces with no concern for the other drivers around them, bearly missing other cars by less than a car length, and generally driving with total disreguard for the safety of themselves or others. Those are the guys I like shortly to pass as they are pulled over by the Police and given a fistfull of citations, taken to jail and their car towed to the impound yard, hopefuly before they kill someone. Another is the A-hole that likes to make love to your bumper, flashing his lights/honing the horn while I am going at the pace of traffic speed (often over the speed limit)  mad

Here in the Boston area, it's really crazy. In parts of the city, people drive quite fast. They also double and even triple park and two-lane roads get blocked off. It's nuts. Anyway, go across the river to Cambridge and everyone's brain immediately gets sucked out of their head. I swear, 99% of people in Cambridge drive no more than 20 mph.

What I love the most are the complete idiots who go around me while I am stopped at a light a courteous distance from the intersection so that cars with a green light have enough room to negotiate a turn on one of our narrow streets. Just this morning I was stopped at the base of a hill at a light and a pickup truck had parked on the opposite side of the street, so it was hard for a car to go up the hill if I stopped too close to the intersection. So, I stopped about 7-8 feet back from the intersection.

This Soccer Mom comes down the hill behind me, passes me (we still have a red light), and blocks the intersection so no one can turn up the hill. Gridlock. In situations such as these, I support retroactive abortion.

Drivers in the Pacific Northwest do not seem to understand two things:

1. The freeway on-ramp is for getting your bucket of bolts up to at least 55MPH. Every freakin' day I get on the on-ramp behind someone who decides to slow down as soon as they are on the on-ramp and continue at about 30MPH then they slow down again to merge into traffic!

2. The drivers on the on-ramp must yield. Yield does not mean stop! Besides, when I am on the freeway seeing cars getting on, I either change lanes or leave 4 or 5 car lengths for the merging car. So, what does the merging car do? The only logical thing: Slow down. WTF?? Speed limits on the freeways in Portland are anywhere from 50 to 60!! HELLO!! Move that SUV! I know you can!

People wonder why I drink....

That plus lets not forget all the irresponsible (mostly Latin guys) with their HUGE egos who engage in road rage incidents at the drop of a hat!! This reminds me of an incident that helped to inspire me to move from Chicago..

I was driving down a 5 lane road (two lanes in each direction and a 'shared center lane for people who want to make left hand turns) and it had snowed the previous evening. There was about an inch of slush on the ground and EVERYONE was sharing the center lane. so instead of dealing with that crap I took my trust front wheel drive only four banger Toyota Corrolla down the far right hand lane alll to myself, passing a LOT of idiots in 4 wheel drive SUV's. My thought at the time was "why the Fu¢k did they waste $30,000 on a vehicle they were NEVER going to use the way it was meant to be used!!!"
I would have happily traded, or even better yet gladly taken the cash diference!!!

Greetings from the land of pleasant living, big inefficient government and taxes up the wazoo, Maryland! Out state politicos can go ahead and plunder millions of dollars to change the name of BWI but, not pass a bill making talking on those damn cell phones while driving illegal. Go figure! I live in Northwest Baltimore where athere is a high proportion of elderly drivers with ET posture (hunched backs). And, when they are piloting Buicks, watch out! They usuall go 20 mph. no matter where even on the Interstates! Then, you have the players dudes driving garrish SUV's with chain link liscense plate brackets yapping on cell phones and blasting the rap music. Now, put those ET old people driving 20 mph. in their buicks and the players behind them and you got demolition derby! And throw in sullen youth pedestrians that challange you by crossing the street in front of you and purposley shuffling and taking their time getting across the street. The same idiots who watch shit shows like Judge Judy, reruns of Friends and Living Single with all those cheesy commercials for bail bondsmen, sleazy lawyers and beeper/pager companys that will give any miscreant a cell phone, SUV or whatever item of conspicuous consumption even if you have no credit and were incarcarated.
And on I 695 and I 95, truckers can drive like bats out of hell even through construction zones and NEVER seem to be pulled over by Maryland's finest.
And, in my neighborhood, you have the big families with 10 kids driving in battered serial killer style mini vans and big assed old Econolines, Dodge Rams and Chevy clunkers that drive as if their eyes are closed and they are floating on ecstasy.

This set of wheels is on it's way to pimped out ride. Notice the tacky plastic rain gaurd. Chances are, the liscense plate bracket looks like chains and soon will come the JC Whitney ghetto deluxe hubcaps.

Old Lady/man wheels ET posture a must!
She hits parked cars and says they hit her!

Throw in some dents and rust spots and your religious family of 12 and you have Twilight Zone driving! [img]
