I went Nov 03.

Absolutely brilliant. We were staying on Ko Samui so had to get the boat over to the island - Koh Phangan. Very easily arranged and not too expensive - a bus ride and a 20 minute speedboat ride.

Wear sensible shoes.. sometime you have to wade through the water to shore.

Loads of bars and eateries on the way to the beach.

When you get to the beach, its about 1/2 mile long, maybe more, with loads of bars spilling out on to the beach all the way along. Lights, music and dancing all on the beach.. very surreal.

The music is not to everyones taste (mine included) but you can't help to get caught up in it.

Drinks are very cheap - you tend to buy a little bucket of beers or a small bottle of vodka / whiskey with Thai red bull which is much stronger than the US / UK version. You have been warned.

If you are intending to sample something other than alcohol, be very careful. Police are everywhere on the beach and I heard some pretty horrific stories whilst I was out there.

Oh yeah, and be prepared to see people shagging on the beach and pissing in the sea.  Smile

Went in Jan, 05! Awesome... it was my first night in Thailand on that trip and it was big!

If I were you I would plan on staying the night at one of the places either the days before or the night after just to let yourself recover before heading back to Samui.

About 200Baht return for the slow ferry, maybe 400baht for the speed boat. But if you're doing that make sure the knob driving the boat hasn't been partying. There was a pretty bad accident when I was there, a speed boat hit a reef and sank which killed about 20 people. Very sad but the cause was the driver was high, so just make sure.

Yeah, its pretty much a given that you could stand on anything random that would end your good time pretty damn fast.

Yeah its absolutely awesome when you see it for the first time... I'd hazard a guess at around about 15,000 people when I was there. And of course cos the moon is out, you can see everything really well (even the things you don't really want to see - be warned).

Wasn't too bad when I was there... basically just club music.

150-200baht each and man they will get you there fast! Take a break mid-way through the night from drinking otherwise you won't last the night.

I wouldn't do it if I were you... just not worth the risk (Thai jail is not nice).

LOL. Funny but so true... Aim to be one of those people so you can go back to the others room!

Ammunition,
If & when you decide to go, please be very careful and dont forget what Monteycarlos said.

My friend was one of those who died on that speedboat accident recently in Thailand coming back from a Full Moon party. Both her and her boyfriend drowned when the speedboat capsized. crying

If there is ANYTHING I can say about it - don't go with the flow just because everyone else is doing it. Be careful and be safe! And whatever boat you do get on - look for, and wear a lifejacket.

Please note that the Thai authorities are trying to get rid of the drug fuelled backpacker types in favour of a higher calibre of tourist and the full moon party is high on the agenda.

As someone who owns property in Thailand and has lived there before I would urge you to refrain from going there and perpetuating the image of the dirty, drug crazed foreigner which has sadly become ingrained in Thai belief. It makes it bad for the rest of us foreigners when our image is belittled by unwashed yobbos off their faces and dancing on a beach.

Can't you just go on a cultural holiday instead? If you want to go dancing go to a nightclub.

Anyway, to start deterring this type of behaviour Thai police have begun a serious crackdown. Basically if you are caught with ANY form of drug you are no longer able to bribe yourway out of it - figure on 10 years jail for cannabis and life for anything more. Large quantities of ecstasy, heroin and 'ya-ba' (a local drug) will see you sentenced to death. Put it this way, last year the Thai police began a crackdown on drugs and sent 30,000 troops into Northern Thailand, resulting in the deaths of over 6000 drug dealers and/or their families. Expect a similar crackdown any day now in Southern Thailand (where Ko phang-ngang is located'. Your full moon party has also been the subject of threats from Islamic militants in Southern Thailand - personally a few less of the great unwashed is no problem for me.

So why not just book a decent relaxing holida, avoid the dreadlocked backpacker scumbags and be a credit to your country for once.

Well that pretty much kills this thread.

Yes consider this thread squeezed!

I went to KPG last summer to meet up with some friends who had ended up there on the tail end of their Asian tour. At the age of 22, I wanted to see what everyone was raving about when I was 18 and couldn't go.

It was interesting for the experience, but I wouldn't go again. Far to many just-out-of-school kids that basically partied at night and sat around bored out of their skulls during the day. 0 culture. 0 local flavour. Not for me...

And as for floating around with a smile on your face, once you factor in 1. supply 2. cost 3. quality 4. risk of death (!) you can have much more fun standing in the middle of a field with 6,000 of your closest friends in the UK. Better music too.

BTW, the method of execution in Thailand is to be tied to a kind of cross in a prison court yard and being hit in the back by a burst out of a mounted machine gun.

There is all you need to know about the full moon parties. Trust me, heed the warnings on that site because they are true.

I went two years ago with some friends. It was a really good time, but a ton of people and alot of cops around searching for drugs. If your gonna smoke weed, do it before you go or after.

Its a lot of fun, but be careful. It can get crazy.

I also saw a bar which was kinda built on bamboo-type "stilts" - absolutely heaving - jam packed with people.

The platform collapsed and everyone fell about 15 feet onto the beach. Not nice to see. Although, some people were so off of their heads that they barely noticed.

Can't he have both ? I kinda liked the contrast from the quieter, more traditional side of things to the manic, slightly more mass-market tourism exhibited in places like KPG.

Ive been to 2 of the parties and yes they are great, i didnt see one cop, thats not to say there were any , more to do with the fact i'd drunk too much samsong!
i stayed on Koh Phang-ngan for 2 weeks, the 2 weeks before the full moon and i must say the atmosphere gets better as you get closer, which made the 1st 2 weeks actually better than the full moon itself, i know people that do this and then leave before the full moon to grab some decent accomadation on samui!

enjoy it its great. check your diary out for the next full moon, its quite international..you get 1 a month!

A suggestion: If you want to go to dance, why don´t you just go to the places where the local people hang out? My first Ex (from the Philippines) dragged me into local clubs with her friends, when we went there for a visit (No, I´m not a disco gore, actually I don´t like club music, and my present girlfriend is the same as me).
