I'm going to Philly next weekend.
Any tips on the downtown, stuff to do, etc?

Are the historical landmarks free or is there a line/fee for taking a look?

Is the city dangerous after dark? I land at 11pm and have to go downtown.

Much appreciated in advance.

Lots of stuff to do downtown. Just stay out of the non-tourist areas. If your comming in late, take the R1 train to Market East or Suburban station if your going downtown. Also, there are buses but take the train.

North Philadelphia and West Philadelphia are not for tourists. But there isn't anything of interest there anyway.

For the most part downtown is just fine after dark. At 11pm areas like Olde City and South Street have many bars and clubs open. Lots of nice places some very up scale.

Of course there is Independence Mall area. It is free an this time of year I can't imagine the security lines being very busy. It is very well protected after 9-11. There is the National Constitution center and Independece hall, Betsy Ross's house, Edgar Allen Poe's house. The Art Museum and Rodin Museum are at the far end of The Ben Franklin Parkway. Then there is Penns Landing, which has the USS Olympia the last surviving ship from the Great White Fleet and Help start the Spanish-American War, along with the USS Bercuna a WWII Sub. If you buy a Ships Pass you can go across the river to the USS New Jersey. The ships all require tickets. There is more to do than I can write here. So tell us what your interested in and we can direct you.

Tex - I live 3 blocks from Ind. Hall and the Liberty Bell. UALPHLCS gave an ultraconcise guide. As he said, tell us where you're staying and what you wanna do and we can help you out. FYI...if you're flying in at 11pm and you're flying in on US, don't check-in any bags...it'll be at least an hour before you can reclaim bags after landing. Most other airlines are fine.

Make sure you do not become unrecognizable on the streets of Philadelphia.

Hmmm? Weekend, potentially nice warm weather (forcasted high of 72); expect a line for the Liberty Bell Center and Independence Hall. Although, the lines won't be as long as they are during the summer.

Worth noting: the current security configuration requires one to go through the Liberty Bell Center before touring Independence Hall. One can not tour Independence Hall before going thorugh the Bell Center. Although there is no admission charge for either of these 2 facilities; the National Park Service, during peak periods, may require tickets before entering the security screening area (which is located along the south side of Market Street between 5th & 6th Streets and until Oct. of 2003 was where the Liberty Bell once was housed). Tickets can be obtained at the Independence Visitor's Center located at the corner of 6th and Market Streets; across the street from the Liberty Bell Center and the security screening area.

Also worth noting: Poe's house is located along a border-line area of the city. Should you decide to visit it; don't wander too far north of Spring Garden Street.

Thanks to all of you for your replies.

I am a history buff, so the Independence Hall stuff is probably where I'll be.

I've heard a lot about Buck's county and how it's "God's country". What kind of stuff is there to do there?
