Well this is even more suprising than Labour getting re-elected. Barcelona are in talks to get their famous shirts sponsored for the first time in their club's history - and who do they decide on...Errr the Chinese government. Doesnt that strike you as wierd, especially as its not even a mega huge deal.

I am just very suprised that of all things they could have promoted, they decide to sponsor another country's sports venue, i seems ironic and odd. But I guess its down to the dollars.

I believe the decision to finally get shirt sponsoring was already adopted last year but somehow never put in practice, maybe because they never found an economically interesting offer.

According to El Mundo Deportivo ( http://www.elmundodeportivo.es/20050506/NOTICIA195568334.html ; in Spanish) the Chinese shirt sponsoring is a part of a much larger agreement. Anyhow, Barcelona is said to make between 19 and 27 milion euros per year while the contract has an initial duration of 5 years.

Although some extra cash is always welcome to any club, Barcelona's finances over the past couple of years haven't been that good, something the relatively new President, Joan Laporte and his team, had to set straight asap when they took on their new job.

As a diehard Barcelona fan myself, I can only welcome some extra money to try and build a even better team for the years to come.

No doubt about it, but does it really have to be from Chinese communist government???

They're promoting the olimpic games in Beijing in 2008, not 'Chinese Communist Way of Life'. And this deal, paying nearly 96 milion euros over a five year period to a football team at the other side of the globe, sounds more like a 'good old capitalistic move' rather than a propaganda effort by the Chinese Comunist Party.

19 and 27 milion euros per year? That is huge! Good for Barca. Will be great to see them hold on to Xavi, and this will help them do it. (Especially if they keep him away from Chelkyovnets, who suppossedly had the acquisition in the bag.) I know they have some serious transfer targets as well.

Schoenorama: I hope they hold on to those six points over RM. Tough fixture this weekend with Valencia, although Valencia seems off form as of late.

The sponsor deal would only run for three years anyway. For the season 2008/2009 Barcelona will have to get a new sponsor. It would be ironic if it were Madrid 2012.

Yeah right. Why do you think they host the games? Just out of pure belief in de Coubertain's ideas? Just like Berlin 1936 and Moscow 1980?  rotfl
Just wait till the opening ceremony...  scared

I guess you already answered it yourself. What else than pure propaganda could be considered paying 100 million EUR to football team on the other side of the globe in 2005 when the venue of the 2008 Olympics is already decided.

Hopefully they can buy a defense now. Keep Puyol mind.

Madrid just has won with 5-0 which means Barça just has to win tomorrow.

Olimpics mean money. BIG MONEY. Whether it's in Atlanta, Barcelona or Beijing.

A wild guess: perhaps they want to promote it to get actual people to see it at the stadiums? People who pay money for their tickets. People who pay money for their hotels, money for their restaurants, money for their taxis, money for their entertainment, money for their museums, money from the short- and longterm sponsorship-contracts???
