Okay lawbreakers, how fast do you drive?

Say the limit is 70 mph. How fast are you going to push your car before you set the cruise control? Me? About 79 mph.

(hope there are no cops watching!)

It depends on the road, conditions (weather and traffic) and if I'm in a hurry or not. But I usually drive about 10 km/h above the posted limit. However, I have been know to drive quite a bit quicker then that. I had my Peugout at about 220 km/h on the autobahn, and here in Canada I got caught doing 130 in a 50 zone (I was young and stupid), funny thing is that I only got a warning!

Around town, I stick to 5-10 over. On the interstate, however, with the 65mph limit, I usually stick in the 75-80 range, occasionally going up in the 80-90 range, depending on traffic and other factors.

Yeah, I try to limit myself to 80 also, but if there is a large pack going 85-90 down the highway, I'm probably going to stick with them. Safety in numbers. Big grin

I like the safety in numbers game too. Sometimes you get a group of cars on our highways doing about 140 km/h, where the limit is 100. In England I was cruising normally at 90 to 95 mph, where the limit is 70. I knew I wouldn't get points on my Canadian license.  Wink

EXTREMELY FAST! I used to have a lead foot. On an open highway, total disregard for any speed limit. The fastest I’ve personally driven is 140 MPH. Now, I’ve mellowed out, respecting speed limits and rarely go 5 over.

My 60 year old father has a need for speed and his Honda S2000 does a good job of fulfilling it. My mom told me about the 100+ MPH ride to church. Go figure.

Speaking of speeding, he got pulled over last summer in a small town in Maine. The policeman asked for his DL and registration, returning to the cruiser. After a while, my mom commented he sure is taking a long time. The policeman returned with the proverbial “Sir, step out of the car, please.”

Turns out my dad had 34 year old warrants for traffic related misdeeds. At the time he had a Massachusetts DL and plates and just figured the hell with a few tickets. The policemen pointed out the warrants are older than him. The policeman let my father go without first advising he is prohibited from driving in the state of Maine.

I recall that thread last year about a user’s classmate arrested for doing 205 MPH on his crotch rocket.

Unless the road is TOTALLY open(or it's a race track), and no animals can 'accidently' get in the way, that's FREAKING suicide!!

I'll usually stick to within +/-5mph of limit on urban areas where cops are bound to hang out with speed guns.

Urban motorways with 50mph limit I'll drive 60-70mph.

On the motorway I am trying to keep it to 24mpg, so about 85-90mph although on 5am breezes up the motorway to LHR I have driven at 130mph (limit of 70mph!) and not seen a soul for 5mins with the exception of the odd truck. Put on a decent mix and turn it up loud, that's when I truly enjoy driving  Smile

On the motorway, I'll stick around 100mph, it's an automatic ban if you are caught going 30 over the speed limit in the UK, but they have to clock you at an AVERAGE 100+ over a measured mile, so if I hover around 100, then I will have time to just pop it down to under 100 so won't get a ban, just a ticket if I get caught.

Also as my car is now on it's 3rd engine, I don't take it above 5,000rpm in 5th gear too much, although I did blast her upto 110mph/5,800rpm last week on the way to BEN's with the roof down on the M4 with the stereo blasting out.  Cool

Around town, I drive to whatever the speed limit is during the day maybe +5 depending on conditions, but in the middle of the night on the way to work, it's speed limit +20.

Really p!$$es me off though when you are stuck behind someone going 10mph BELOW the speed limit - even more so at 0400.  gnasher

-At home in Illinois, usually the speed limit (but being flexible up to 10mph over the limit). Same here in VA and most other states in which I drive except the following:
-In Ohio, I'm always watching my speedometer. I was over quite often my last time through, but those Ohio cops have some vendetta going on, it seems.
-In California, especially on 101 (and sometimes I-5), I'll usually do between 75-90, sometimes higher - doesn't matter if I'm in S.D., S.F., L.A. - it seems like those California cops don't give a rip like cops in other states.

Rush Hour on I-15 into Salt Lake City I can easily hit 85 mph, when out of the city I usually go 90-95. I got a ticket for going 88 in a 65 recently. Understand this is how we roll in Utah: we drive like crap, but go really fast anyway.

I usually drive about 10k or 15% faster than the limit (whichever is lower):

    50k becomes 60k
    70k becomes 80-85k
100 becomes about 115-120k or so (depends on the road)
110 (highway speed here in Alberta) becomes up to 135k.

However, I drive exactly 30k in playground/school zones.
