Margaritas: A Ladies' Drink!

The Cinco de Mayo thread made me think that it's about time to tell the truth to our American friends. Margaritas, that great Mexican drink they enjoy every Cinco de Mayo, are a ladies' drink.

Yep, no self-respected Mexican straight male would ever dare to ask for a Margarita at their local pub. Never. A margarita is ok for your shy GF, your sisters or even your Mom when she wants to try something strong. Nonetheless, it's a no-no for men.

To be honest, I tried my first Margarita until I went to an American university. The fact that at every Mexican restaurant Margaritas were in every table made me brave enough to ask for one. However, I'd never drink one in Mexico. We have plenty of ways to drink tequila, but margaritas are forbidden for Mexican men.

So my American friends, that's why at your last Spring Break the waitress gave you a funny look when you ordered margaritas for your buddies and you. That's why that handsome local guy kept staring at you when you were drinking your margarita in Cancun.

Now that you know the truth, drink it by your own risk!

That's bull!
I am very secure in my sexuality and I drink margaritas all the time. When I drink them it's when I am having dinner or at a party that is serving them.
However if I am at a bar with my buddies, then it's ususlly beer.
My cocktail of choice is Long Island Iced Teas.

For me, the only thing to mix with tequila is your taste-buds as it goes down straight from the shot glass.  drunk

The American male, straight or gay, couldn't care less what self-respecting Mexican males think. Margaritas in the US are associated with Jimmy Buffett and chips and salsa, not a lack of Mexican machismo.

Frankly, I find margaritas too sweet.

If anyone happens to drag me to Mexico (kicking and screaming- the only way i'd ever go), i'd order what ever the hell I want. Without such tourists, places like Cancun wouldn't exist.

Hehe, you're taking way too serious this thread. Keep your anger at the proper threads, those dealing with the GOP, conservatives and gay rights.

This thread only tries to highlight the fact that men in Mexico don't drink margaritas. After all, it's a Mexican drink despite "Jimmy Buffet and chips and salsa"

That wasn't anger.
I'm sorry if it came out that way.
What I was trying to say is that the American concept of Mexico is totally divorced from what Mexico is. In the US, Margaritas are a summer drink enjoyed with chips and salsa. The fact that they originated in Mexico is purely secondary at this point.

Nicely put. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, if everyone is drinking a margarita at a 4th of July party, then odds are I'll have one too, regardless of what someone in Oaxaca thinks of it.

You're right. That's why I thought would be interesting to let you know that in Mexico margaritas' "image" is different to its image in the USA.

I know that many American men, either straight or gay, drink margaritas. It's not a matter of virility, just a matter of different cultures or societies.

Gee, I thought you my fellow American A.netters would be amused but it seems that you are taking it in the wrong way.

Anyway... cheers!

We make "malternatives" like Zima, Mike's Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Ice, etc., etc., etc. Doesn't mean any self-respecting male should drink it though.

Yes but it is true.............Mexicans in general do not drink Margaritas, and when you see someone drinking one is usually a woman, or a tourist from abroad...........a good one can be very tasty, but I preffer a lot of other ways of drinking tequila.

Ah Margaritas!......Baja California's gift to the liquor drinking world  Smile

Killer margarita recipe:
Makes about 1.5 blender runs

1 cup lime juice
1 cup Tequila (use a good one, I am partial to Sauza Commemortivo)
1 cup simple syrup (1cup sugar 2/3 cup water cooked until clear)
1/2 cup Cointreu (i may have blown the spelling)
1/2 cup Grand Marnier

Put it in a blender with ice, do the obvious, then Drink

They ain't cheap but they make posts by TheCoz funny.

I would suppose I am «wink wink nudge nudge» since a LIIT is one of my favorite drinks! I'll have to hit up the bars around SFO next time I'm down there, and check for the ramper types downing their manly men LIIT's. This has opened up a whole new world of cruising opportunities I've been aloof to for far too long!

ugh, a LIIT sounds nasty--never been able to drink those.

i have only recently been able to stomach margaritas and tequlia in any fashion. i had a bad experience during my fraternity "sink night" in college which was about 7 years ago that ended with my passing out in a trash can from having drank a lot of tequila at a certain station. of course i dont remember, it is simply documented in emails and pictures taken by my brothers before they pulled me out of the trash can and put me to bed.

I am a straight male and I enjoy some of those malternatives sometimes. Smirnoff Twisted Green Apple tastes good.

As for Margaritas, I will keep on drinking them. Especially the ones with the extra shot of Triple Sec!

Instead of Margaritas, try straight, room temperature Tequila? Manly enough for you?  Wink

Last time in Torreon, I was catching a cold. Some local friends told me to SIP 2 shots of room temp tequila.

surprisingly, it worked.

The simple remedy seems to work the night before I feel myself coming down with a cold. I now swear by it.

Haha, I don't know how it is at other colleges, but here in NYC we are a hard alcohol kind of school and the drink of choice for the ladies is the LIT. Now I don't mean to insult anyone on this thread, but it is the drink all the ladies start off with, as it has enough alcohol to skill a small mammal in a glass. What's the proper drink for a man you ask? Eh...Whiskey sours are pretty damn popular around here. I personally like my bourbon or whiskey straight up, as I believe Superfly does as well.

I remember having this argument with a friend from Colombia (about margaritas). He had me when he said "what would you think if I walked with a group of my friends into one of your bars and ordered a round of cosmos?" Now I enjoy margaritas in the privacy of my own home. ; ) Another thing from my Colombian friend..."After all, margarita means daisy in Spanish...do you really want to be a flower boy?" All in all though, I will never totally give up frozen margaritas...they are too delicious.
