Check out the refraction of the sunlight in the #2 engine exhaust. This picture would make a great example for a high school science class. Also, a great example of how the eyes can be fooled into seeing something that isn't really there. UFO's anyone?

Hi guys.

I think it's probably the condensed moisture in the exhaust that's reflecting the sunlight like a mirror.

Cool photo.

Are we looking at the same photo?  Smile

There is a car on the bottom left... but I can't see any helicopters.

I guess that is possible, but wouldn't there be much less condensation in the exhaust as compared to the surrounding air. And, why doesn't it work when there is visible vapor in the air. Wouldn't that make a cloud a large mirror?

I think what is happening here is a vertical mirage caused by the refraction of the light through the hot exhaust as opposed to a horizontal mirage that occurs on a roadway or desert.

I had a physics professor explain that an inversion layer could cause an inverted mirage. This could cause street lighting, for example, to mysteriously appear in the sky if the conditions were right. Still looking for an example of that though.

It was a joke, however, Waldo is the one standing next to the car.

No. Actually the fuel/air combustion adds more water into the atmosphere:

Gasoline and diesel (including jet fuel) is essentially a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules (hydrogen and carbon atoms). When they are combined with oxygen (burned), the atoms are rearranged to form carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). For every gallon of fuel combusted, approximately one gallon of water is produced. This water, of course, is in vapor form. (Note: this is why car exhaust systems are so prone to rusting)

Since the air entering the engine's intake already contains a certain amount of water, the combustion only adds more to it. If this extra water content pushes the air past its saturation point, and the air temperature is cool enough to freeze water vapor, then a contrail will form!

Okay, that makes sense. Do you have an opinion as to why the sun's light is appearing in the exhaust?

Do you have an opinion as to why the sun's light is appearing in the exhaust?

Because the hot gas is at such a different density (due to higher temperature) than the surrounding air, that it actually appears to be a separate fluid from the surrounding air. If you look at the rest of the exhaust stream, the flow appears to take on the same look as if you pour clear cooking oil in a water jug and shake it up. Why? Because each of the fluids have different densities, hence you can see one within the other. Another good example is a lava lamp.

Regarding the sun's light appearing in the exhaust, this is because the light is reflecting off the exhaust's boundary to the surrounding air. This is the same reason that you can see the sun's reflection on the ocean during any given time of day: Water (as a liquid) has a significantly different density than air.

PS: The sun's light is not the only thing being reflected: Note the same effect from the buildings below.

Ah, I know what that is. It IS a secret UFO super weapon constructed by the LIBERALS and gays and negroes, all a part of their secret agenda to take over the world, and get rid of good white Christian folk like us.
I know all this because I am a very very smart 10...er....13....er...14 year old who KNOWS the secret agenda of their kind.

I also know that the UFO is MASSIVE, because I measured it using my pee-pee. As you can see, it is about 2 cm on the picture, which is 1.9 cm longer than my pee-pee (I used this as I don't have a ruler, so I use my pee-pee as the standard to measure everything).

Anyway, by extrapolating (see, I am smart, I use big words!) the distance and doing calculations and stuff, I have concluded that this super-weapon is 300 m in length and will strike us in 3 days....GOD SAVE US!!!!!!!!!

OH...and God also bless G.W Bush, our commander-in-chief so that he can lead the rebellion and crush the oppressors (yeah, I just saw Star Wars, but it was too complicated for me to understand though).
