Shaq Rises In My Estimation

I've never been a fan of Shaq, especially off the court, as he's made some pretty disgusting remarks in the past (one in a post-game interview once about "taking a dump" comes to mind).

But reading this

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...3/shaq.mikan.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

...and seeing that he does appreciate a little basketball history, and who he owe's a debt to in that history, I have to tip my cap to the dude.

And anyone who has any knowledge of the history of basketball, know how big George Mikan was. RIP to the original NBA big man, and good job, Shaq.

Over the course of their history, the Lakers have been fortunate enough to have had on their team three players who helped revolutionize the game of basketball, and especially the center position: George Mikan, Kareem, and Shaq. It's nice to see Shaq note Mikan's contributions to the game.

I too was quite impressed with Shaq's generous offer to Mikan's family. I was also glad to see the family take up Shaq on that offer.

Uh, I think you had better put Wilt The Stilt in there, too. Any guy who scored 100 points in a game helped to define it.  Smile

I seriously considered Wilt (looking at it from the Laker career, rather than the revolutionary player angle). He was definitely one who revolutionized the game. In him I saw a great player who basically spent only four years plus with the Lakers.

In watching last night's Heat/Pistons game, I recall TNT showing a Sports Illustrated cover that showed Mikan, Kareem, and Shaq only. At the time, I wondered myself why Wilt wasn't on the cover. The more I thought about it, the more I realized his exclusion must have had to do with the fact he only spent four full years with the Lakers (plus a 12 game season).

Shaq spent eight seasons with the Lakers, and Kareem spent fourteen.

That's my only reason for not mentioning Wilt the Stilt.

PS: of course, we all know that Wilt has more than one scoring record!!  wink

So...where are the Lakers in all this? I would think they'd show some charity to a player who served the franchise well. Did I miss on their response to his death?

If they did nothing, then Shaq's generous offer is really sticking it to the Lakers.

May George Miken RIP
