June 6th has been the Swedish National Holiday for years now, but this year is the first year when June 6th is a read day in the calendar and nobody has to work. The history behind it is that King Gustav Vasa won over the Danes and Sweden became independent in 1523, and that the first Swedish constitution was signed on June 6th in 1812.

So of all you Swedes out there, how many of you are gonna celebrate??
I'm just gonna wear my Tre-kronor shirt and have a few drinks with my friends.

Congrats on the big day.  Smile

I won't be celebrating myself, as we are currently marking a certain event which happened 100 years ago here this summer.  Wink

Btw, which day was D-Day? June or July the 6th?
Suppose it was july as nobody have mentioned it yet.

Why was it not a non-work holiday before?

June 6th was also the day of the events in the song "Convoy".
(It was the dark of the moon on the 6th of June in a Kenworth...)

So of course I'm celebrating!
Happy Convoy Day everybody!!!

Perhaps I'll celebrate it by washing the Volvo.

It's a shame that we don't celebrate it more, but now it just feels like an "artificial" day that everybody wants to celebrate but no one knows why.

Micke, use the "official" celebration guide: www.aftonbladet.se/vss/nyheter/story/0,2789,655982,00.html
