i downloaded a game called "Tower" for those old computers and installed it onto my ancient doorstopper. Problem is, it'll only work if the computer is in 256-color mode. How do I change it?

Flying an aeroplane with only a single propeller to keep you in the air. Can you imagine that? -Capt. Picard

Changing Graphics Modes under Windows 3.1

There are several places where it may be possible for you to change your graphics mode. First, minimize all windows including Program Manager to see if a graphics utility program is running. Examples of this would be a Matrox or Diamond graphics utility. If you have one, you can probably click on its icon and follow the instructions in your software manual to make the changes you need.

If you don't have that kind of utility running (most people don't), you may have a similar utility located somewhere else. First you need to open up your Control Panel. This can be found by looking in the Main folder of your Program Manager, or it can be run by clicking on File | Run in Program Manager and typing c:windowscontrol.exe if your hard disk with Windows is drive C. Once the Control Panel window is open, check to see if there are any graphics utilities, such as XGA Setup.

If you haven't found anything yet (again, most people fall into this category), you need to run Windows Setup. This can be found in your Main folder in Program Manager or it can be launched by typing c:windowssetup.exe if Windows is located in c:windows. Choose Options | Change System Settings... Now you should write down the entry in the Display category. Then click on the box that lists your driver and try to select a driver that fits your graphics card, video mode, and color mode. If none seem to fit, try running the VGA driver that comes with Windows, which will work suitably with this application. You may need to access drivers on a disk that came with your graphics card or are located somewhere else on the hard disk by selecting "Other Display" at the bottom of the list. Consult your video card company and documentation to help you with this step. Once you have selected a mode, hit the OK button, select Options | Exit, and reboot your computer.

I'd post a swing and a miss here, but I don't have the time to waste on such a LAME shot...
