Hey all, I've been at my new job for a little over a week now and I have to vent a little. I work for UAF's bookstore. I have my little office area on the top (3rd) floor of a building which has been declared a historic landmark because the Alaska state constitution was written here. (hence the name Constitution Hall) I think that's pretty cool to think that something important happened where I work everyday. The problem with historic buildings is that you have to jump through hoops to do any sort of modifications to them.

Last week all the doors were replaced to comply with ADA. The frames had to be widened so physical plant (department on campus in charge of this sort of thing) removed our light switch because it was in the way. This was done a week ago and they haven't replaced the switch yet. I find out that they have to fill out all the proper paperwork to install a new light switch. Apparently, adding a light switch modifies the building significantly even though that light switch was there only a week and a half ago!

It's a good thing this is summer in Fairbanks and we have (almost) south facing windows so we don't need lights. It will probably be a few months before we get our light switch back.

I find this a ridiculous level of bureaucracy. Do any of you have similar stories about the government to share?

Semper ubi sub ubi.

A friend of my late father bought a 15th century house in Northern Germany. He obviously wanted to live in it, but he discovered that it was considered a listed monument. He had a hard time in convincing the respective government department, when he wanted to install a late 20th century heating system, insulated windows and water. He wanted to do all the modifications in a way that the house would look the same on the outside, but modern on the inside, but they wanted to force him to live 15th century style....

I take it the Government provided the necessary forms (in triplicate) to request authentic 15th century plague bacilli, and advised him which Federal Department is now responsible for religious persecution and pogroms. Have to keep it authentic, right ?  Smile
