This was all over the British news, how come we haven't heard of it in the US? This should be all over the news.

The media has a tendency to rally around the president and focus on things like a missing WASP and 47 dead in Iraq this month. I’ve heard of it, but today was the first I heard of CNN mentioning it.

Because there is nothing to see. The only people making a big deal about it are a bunch of whiney Democrats. A third hand piece of paper isn't proof of anything. The U.S. media has run plenty of stories about it and found out that the dog won't bark. If the New York Slimes and Washington Compost aren't putting it on the front page every day then that says they know it is a dead end story. (They'd rather spend all their time whining about prisoner "abuse" since that is what the Democrats are going to try and use to call for impeachment.)

Besides, regime change in Iraq by any and all means became official U.S. policy in 1998 when Congress passed it unanimously and Bill Clinton signed it. This was all the authorization President Bush needed but instead he got it not only from Congress (who based their decision on intelligence provided independent of the President) and even the U.N.

Its pretty damning evidence if you ask me. The real question I see is, did the president deliberately do this, lead us into war? Or was he fooled by others, a pawn in their plans?

If he deliberately did this, it certainly appears to be grounds for impeachment.

The Downing Street memo does tell some of the story. It received a good deal of attention in Europe because it further strengthened their general belief that the US was set dead red on a war with Iraq via any means necessary. Blair's dismissal of the memo as "nothing we didn't already know" added to the fervor. Let's jump back a bit to the summer of 2000 in Michigan: Bush is in a hotel room with just over a dozen leading Republicans and 3 or 4 reporters. In that room he stated that one of the goals of his administration, were he to win (he had not yet been "officially" nominated by the party), would be to remove Sadaam Hussein from power. This news has also fallen on deaf ears in the US. The problem is that the majority of the background information we are receiving about the war is coming from overseas sources. Fox News in particular and even CNN, ABC, and CBS to a degree prefer to ignore the US image and US news overseas that is reported by foreign media. In addition, the media has been cowed into submission by the administration's tough guys: they have threatened to not allow certain people and certain stations into the White House briefings if they press certain issues or report on sensitive issues. While this has no doubt been happening for years by Presidents on both sides of the aisle, it is much more overt with the current administration.

The Downing Memo in itself is vaguely damning, but it cannot prove that anything illegal or unethical occured. It certainly suggests that the President and people close to the President were searching for any way to invade Iraq legal or not, but it does not prove anything. With the way Congress is set up right now, there is no chance for any type of investigation to commence either, even if more solid evidence is found. And let's face it, if the Democrats had been in power when the Senate attempted to impeach Clinton for perjury, that investigation never would have happened either. Until a major US media publication is able to produce some solid evidence that Bush & Co. intentionally lied to the people and fabricated evidence, there will be no story here at home. With the way the President and his Cabinet keep tight control over knowledge and then systematically attempt to destroy anyone who dares speak negatively about the Administration, it is highly unlikely that such a major media breakthrough will occur. Even though we had intelligence that told us that our main source on Iraq's WMD capabilities was a highly compromised person who had a reputation for making up facts and drinking heavily.

Did anyone see Clinton comment on it while he was a guest on David Letterman?

I like the fact he choose to focus on the here and now, instead of sinking into partisian mud slinging.
