Question For Alaskans: Frank Murkowski

Considering that Frank the Tank's approval ratings appear to be somewhere near the bottom of Gastineau Channel, what do my fellow Alaskans on this board think of his performance, and furthermore, what do you think his chances of re-election will be?

I personally don't agree with most of the stuff he's done while in office, and I am a republican, albeit somewhat moderate.

Concerning his re-election next year, I believe it will be an interesting race. One thing that has always amazed me about Alaskans is that no matter how much we bitch about and disapprove of a politician, we always seem to re-elect them. It's as if we don't want to bother training a new one. Kind of like what Mr. Whitekeys says about Don Young: He wins every election despite the fact that nobody ever admits to voting for him.

Thoughts? Comments? Agreements? Disagreements?

I don't really know the guy, but I did speak with him once about a PR campaign we were doing with the Oil Markets. I saw that name on the forum and was like, whoa. Weird.

Truth....

He was viewed as the better of two bad alternatives.

Frankly I am surprised that nobody has tried to take a shot at him yet.

But you have to assume that if the democrats are smart enough to run a conservative democrat, which isn't particularly uncommon up here. Then Frank has an uphill battle.

And figure that he is going to face somebody in the Republican Primary.

Frank Who????

Has he decided to run - again?

My vote for Frank the Tank (I like that - better than Frank the Bank) was a vote against his opponent, good ole Franny, NOT a vote for Murkowski. I think he should have stayed right there in DC where he did more good for Alaska.

He's successfully aliented the oil companies by raising the taxes on all the fields up here (I'm at work at Prudhoe at the moment).

He successfully got any hopes of cooperation in the near future between the Producers (Conoco/Phillips, BP, etc) and the State on an all-Alaska Natural Gas Line shot in the ass.

He successfully screwed the Alaska Ferry system to the point of shutdown, and we have a brand new US$35mil Fast Ferry, Chenega, sitting in Auke Bay without a crew to run it because Robin Taylor*** and his idiots at the DOT can't get through the contracting. Perhaps not a direct fault of Frank the Bank - but Taylor was his choice to run the Ferry System.

*** As for Robin Taylor from Wrangell, it is preposterous to take the Chenega and Fairweather off the Skagway, Sitka, Haines/Juneau run in the winter and send them to Ketchikan and Petersburg/Juneau. WTF? Who the hell want to go there with that much frequency in the winter??? I don't even want to go to Wrangell in the Summer!!! The traffic flow is in/out of Haines and Skagway. The answer, my Alaskan friends, is so Frank the Bank can justify the road from Juneau into Skagway that nearly NO ONE wants in Haines or Skagway. The reason the Ferry system is broken is because of constant headaches and changes. . .

Oh, speaking of Frank the Tank and ferries - he successfully stranded 400 passengers and countless vehicles in Juneau this summer by sending the Kennicott off to Anchorage with 18 passengers aboard to show off the ferry system . . . most of the 250 possible travelers for that special trip FLEW to ANC rather than spend 3 days crossing the Gulf on a Blue Schoolbus Cruise Ship wannabe. Nice Boat, the Kennicott, but not somewhere I want to spend a summer day if I have other options.

And lastly, of Frank the Tank and Nepotism! That sorry, lame, useless excuse for a Junior Alaskan Senator names Lisa, his devil spawn, is an embarrassment to Alaskans everywhere. She is out of her league, a simple Hanger-on in the land of big politics and big decisions. She should go back to her birth town, Ketchikan, and run for Dog Catcher. I cannot fathom how she was elected in her own right. I voted for Knowles.

Ohhh, for the days of Walter Hickel and Bill Egan!!!! Wait - how many of you are old enough to remember them as Governors???

On a side note, I flew with Wally and Ermalee back from Hawaii last summer. I told Hickel he ought to run again - he said he'd have to run as a democrat this next time since he'd already handily won as a Repub and Independent.   .

So, Frank the Tank - you're a one termer, better hope your retirement is secure.

That enough info for ya Chugach?

Robin Taylor has had a bone to pick with the marine highway system for years and isn't a freind of it. I am half concinced he was put in there to tank the system.

LMAO. Me too!

Seriously though, when can we get rid of this guy? The next election seriously can't be soon enough! But who can run against Frank and have a chance at winning? I know it looks like Teresa Obermeyer could run for Governor right now and win by a landslide, but remember the Senate election last fall. I could've swore Tony was going to beat Lisa to a pulp! And look who wins!

Berkowitz recently filed to run for the Dems in the next election, but does he really have much of a chance given the unpredictable habits of voters in this state? I do agree with ANC Flyer... Hickel needs to run again! I may have been in middle school when he was in office last, but I do remember some of the crazy ideas he had and that he seemed to be well liked by most. At least he didn't go around insisting he needed a private jet.  Smile

Ha Ha Ha - my pet Goldfish might be a good candidate for "have a chance at winning" against Frank the Bank at this point.

Here's what TRULY scares the hell out of me. Signs from Juneau point to Ethan Berkowitz and Ben Stevens running. Talk about "just shoot me"!!!

Berkowitz is the ultimate liberal pain in the ass state Senator. His counterpart, Ben Stevens wouldn't make a pimple on his Daddy's ass - and I've told him as much . . . both are excellent examples of partisan politicians that operate like runaway freight trains. I want neither in the Governor's mansion.

After the bullshit Stevens pulled with Mayor Begich over the transportation plan in Anchorage - he lost what little respect I had left for him. What a pinhead.

The Ferrys have been around since 1958 (with the Chilkoot - I know, you all don't remember back that far) but truly came to life in 1963 when the Malaspina, the first one, hit the water. I'm partial to those old blue canoes and anyone that tries to put them out of business has made an enemy with me.

Holy Shit, I could have gone the rest of the yaer without hearing THAT name! What a nut case - certifiable!  crazy   crazy   crazy  On a lighter note, has anyone ever seen the parody of her at the Fly By Night Club! Priceless . . .

What's really ugly is that I remember Hickel the FIRST time he was governor . . . in the mid 1960s. Dangit  old  git!

What think you all of Seekings from Fairbanks? I don't know much about his city politics, being from ANC.

It'll be interesting, that's for sure.

Well, I just woke up and the radio was all abuzz about the rumor that Murkowski might be named an ambassor to an "Asian" nation.

Which might be a way to keep him from being embarrassed in an election up here and would make Leman an incombant in the next election.

Yes, rode the Dramanine Express down the chain on more then one occasion. Anybody wants to take a cruise up here, I suggest the AKMH instead.

Classic responses, and ANCflyer, I can't say it much better myself.

If Frank is to be booted out of office in the election, the Dems in this state can't make the same mistake that the Dems nationwide made in the presidential election: just assume that people will vote for anybody who isn't Bush (or in this case, Murkowski).

I think the comments about the ferry system are spot on. I had to cancel a trip to Cordova next month because those idiots pulled the Chenega off the route and fouled up the schedules. There was an interesting article in the Press last week (biased source, I know) about Frank re-routing the fast ferries because of his ties to Ketchikan, and because of his agenda on building a road that seemingly most people, myself included, don't want built.

Speaking of Frank and ferries, who the hell does he think he is sending a ferry to Gustavus and Glacier Bay? When A. nobody in Gustavus wants the ferry, and B. it's illegal to operate them inside the national park (where the dock is) to begin with. The guy acts like this state is his own personal playground, as opposed to actually attempting to help the residents.

As far as Lisa goes, I am still flabbergasted that Knowles didn't win that election. I mean I am absolutely, utterly, shocked that she not only won, but also beat out one of the more popular politicians in this state to begin with.

Speaking of the Stevens family, here is a true story: About two and a half years ago I came down with chicken pox, and started breaking out with the leasions on a flight from Seattle to Anchorage, coincidentally the same plane that Uncle Ted was on (in first class, no less). Anyway, I had no clue what was happening to my face, so we land in ANC and I go to the restroom by the baggage claim to take a leak and who comes up to the urinal next to me but Ted Stevens himself. And let me tell you, he took a loooooong look at my face when he walked in there. It wasn't until I looked in the mirror that I realized I looked like a science experiment.

Good, let him go elsewhere and screw something up. At least he'll be outta here for a while. And take that kid of his with him, get her out of the US Senate. . . .

I like Uncle Ted. In the mid-1990s I commuted from ANC to DCA/IAD on UA and often was seated next to him in F or at least in the same cabin. He's done great things for Alaska. His son Ben, however, is a wannabe and will never be the caliber of his Father. He bullies his way about the State Senate like a little pit bull alienating everyone he contacts. I've no use for him - and I've known Ben since grade school.

Our ferry system is screwed as long as Robin Taylor has anything to do with it. And you're right about the Murkowski ties to Ketchikan. Couple that with Taylor coming from that little craphole Wrangell and we'll never get the Fast Ferries up here where they belong.

It'll be a sad day when there is an overpass off the mountain over the White Pass Coach Yards into Skagway.
