Television presenter Richard Whiteley has died after a long illness.

The host of Channel 4's day time quiz show Countdown had been recovering from pneumonia and missed recording of the upcoming series.

The 61-year-old presenter from West Yorkshire fell ill back in May and was rushed to hospital in Bradford. He had been said to be "recovering slowly".

That's a shock, though I don't much watch the programme that made him well known, last reports were that he was getting better.

Reading the BBC obit, he was the poor bloke savaged by a ferret with an attitude in that famous TV clip from the 70's.

OMG! I am shocked at this too! I also was lead to believe he was on the road to recovery. Have seen him a few times over the years as he lived not far from me.

No more of his garish ties on Countdown  Sad

I took a look at the front page of Metro today and was dumbfounded. Apparently he died while in heart surgery. I guess Carol will have to go alone to bondage clubs now.

Wow, that news came out of no where. Used to kill time sometimes during the summer holidays in the UK watching countdown. Sad to hear he's passed away.

RIP the Mayor of Wetwang. He's a tv institution in the UK. Countdown was the first program broadcast on C4. He'll be missed by a whole lot of people, myself included.

Ironic that he was recently in those Channel 4 stings where he was saying that he wanted to be remembered as being the "First face on Channel 4" - well he has certainly achieved that.

I personally remember being very excited about the arrival of Channel 4 after years of only having 3 TV channels, and remember watching Countdown for the first time. It'll never be the same without him.

RIP Mr. Whiteley.

Already the jokes are starting to come in...
"At least Richard Whitely finished on a nine letter word....Pneumonia"
"The song that will be played at his funeral will be 'The Final Countdown'"
