All of the Amish I've ever seen (and I'm from Philly - only an hour from Amish Country in PA) are still stuck in the 18th century - they don't believe in any kind of technology. That's not to say that there aren't Amish people somewhere that do believe in technology.

Quoting Espion007 (Reply 2): Thats like going to circuit city and asking if any amish people are there.
Maybe.... BUT.....
Quoting S12PPL (Reply 5): That is the most retarded question I've ever heard.
No it isin't...
I forgot what the "FACTS" are around this but it goes like this: A) there was a reality show about the Amish integrating with modern young adults. B) It's based on an Amish tradition where for a year (somewhere around their 18th birthday) they spend time in 'civilized society'. It's kind of a gut check to make sure that they are really dedicated to the life of being Amish. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an Amish kid in that period or who has been through it and decided to stay out, and is a member here.
Goodness knows there is no way I could watch jets fly overhead, and not want a part of the society that embraces them.

Oh they believe in technology, they just don't use anything that they don't need. I know some Amish people very well and they have electricity, but not computerrs or air conditioners, but stoves and fans, sure!

Orthodox/Hasidic Jews have long hair braided at the sides of their heads and usually allow their beards to grow long (to hold to Torah law which prohibits cutting off one's hair.) Amish do not have the long braids, and they also trim their beards.
Quoting CaptOveur (Reply 18): Actually that is in Oxford, Ohio.. Which I believe is Warren County.
Oxford, Ohio, is in either Hamilton or Butler County, north-northwest of Cincinnati; Warren County is northeast of Cincinnati.
Most of the Amish in Ohio are in northeastern and north central Ohio, in Holmes, Wayne, Geauga and Trumbull counties.

Reminds me of an early scene in the movie Witness when the Amish boy, Samuel, while w/his mother at 30th Street Station sees what he thinks is another Amish man. Samuel approaches him (the guy has his back towards him), and when the gentleman turns around; Samuel (as well as the movie audience) discover that the man is an Orthodox/Hasidic Jew.
One of the lighter moments of the film.
One thing is for sure, a devout Amish A.netter (if such one exists) will probably not opt to post his/her portrait on the Self-Pic threads.

I read an article in a magizine the last time I was in Ohio that was about how some Amish people are using technology in business practice. It was very interesting...they would use computers at work, and then go home in a buggy and have electricity and no computer or radio etc.

Another Witness reminder: After Harrison Ford (disguised as an Amish farmer) punches out one of the locals (and, hence, blows his cover); Samuel's grandfather explains, "Oh, he's Ohio Amish."
