Known as the “King of Rai,” Algerian singer Khaled is an international star. With a blend of funk, reggae, and Arabic music, Khaled pioneered the transformation of “rai” music from a local style to worldwide popularity.

Multi-Grammy award-winning producer/composer and musician Don Was joined Khaled for this special concert, which also features reggae vocalist Elan, percussionist Walfredo Reyes, Jr., and local producer, DJ, Cheb i Sabbah as well as Carlos Santana

This was a free concert in a park here in San Francisco that often host free concerts.
The show went on for 3 hours and the jam with Carlos Santana was amazing. The place was packed with well over 6000 people. It was a very divserse and peaceful crowd.

Learn more about Khaled here:
Hope you can read Arabic.  Smile

To see him with Santana had to be a great moment indeed !
I saw Khaled in concert several times and had the opportunity to meet him when we were guest performers before his own show here in Switzerland some years ago. I was very impressed by his professionalism and his kindness, he was always smiling and we had a great time, good old days...

You were in a band that opened for Khaled?!?!?!  Wow!
Much respect to you!  praise

I noticed you play bass and guitar. So do I but I am not in a band and that would be sweet to be able to play with world reknown acts such as Khaled.
That's great man!

What style of music does your band play?

Quoting Superfly (Reply 2):

Yes Superfly and it was great to open for him. But curiously our band didn't play music that fits with Khaled music anyway... this was back in 1995 when I played for a band who had a pretty good "underground" success (if you know what I mean) in the french part of Switzerland. The name of that band was Diancandor and the only thing I've found when I googled is this page :

I'm the one on the far right (don't laugh!)

After our show I attended Khaled's gig backstage and we had a great time dancing and singing along his songs !

Oh Superfly ! I hope you'll play in band one day... it's very important for musicians like us and specially the bass guitar to play in a band. You'll improve a lot afterwards... and maybe one day open for such an artist.

Well, it was a little weird to be honest, but if you want to have a taste of it I've specially uploaded these three songs on my server so you can have an idea of the thing...

Fish In Atmosphere (Studio)
Satis (Studio)
Busi Song (performed Live)

May the Bass be with you !
Hope you'll like it  Wink

Alphafloor: I downloaded and listened to "Fish in Atmosphere." Crazy ass shit! Sort of King Crimson meets Lena Lovich, if you follow me. Cool, thanks. When I have some more time I'll pull down the other two.

Anyway, I've played electric bass since 1980. Started out on a Rick 4001, and am now using a fretless Fender Jazz. My main axe is a Czech upright, as I have been playing Jazz around Boston for a few years (although I've basically given that up). I also play in a local symphony orchestra. My real job has gotten more and more, shall we say, important these past few years, and I got rather tired of lugging my rig and axe around after a full day of work.

Anyway, thanks for the links; one question: do you use a pick (and yes, it's a loaded question)?

Logan

Probably one of the best if not THE best bass... Perhaps I'm a little biased as I'm the proud owner of a 1977 Fender Jazz bass ...but with frets  Wink

In these songs I played with my fingers. However I like to use a pick from time to time and specially when I want the sound of bass to be sharp and precise. Actually I started playing bass with a pick and when I took some lessons I started to work with my fingers only and now I rather prefer to play this way.

Good answer. Wink There's a time and a place for using a pick, but to me, any bass player who can ONLY use a pick might want to ask themselves if they are truly playing their instrument. Yes, I'm a snob about this.

Cheers

WOW! great bass! (Jaco memories! Big grin )I use a Warwick fretless, and love it. I Bought it when I played in a jazz fussion group, but as it was demanding too much time, I had to leave... Now I play in more "informal" groups, with my fretless, is even heard somewhere a gothic metal group with a fretless bass played with pick (ARRRGGGHHHH!!!! Big grin ). Anyway, I don't play with pick anymore, I like the broad sound of my fretless played with fingers!

Yes Jaco... Mighluss ! I have bought a CD with a concert of him and he was playing alone with his bass with some effects but mainly "delays". It is just incredible what the guy did to the instrument. I was so amazed by this performance that I wanted to do the same but didn't have fretless bass, so I took my first bass, an old hard-rock fashioned bass "Wasburn" (horrible !) and I removed all the frets myself ! Sounded not great but at least I could play "Teen Town" (at a lower tempo  Wink ) and the cover from the Bealtes "Black Bird"... well, ... uhu.. "like" him  Wink

My next move will be to buy an acoustic fretless bass if I can spare some money !

I'll listen to some more at home.

Glad to see a lot of bass players come out on this thread.
Many here already know I play a Rickenbacker 4001 bass. I am very happy with it. The only other electric bass I would like to have would be an Alembic M-King bass. I'll probably never get one because they are so expensive.
I'd buy a stand up string bass before I'd buy a Alembic.
My next guitar is going to be a Gibson ES-330 or ES-345.

sorry... couldn't resist!

even I hate recordings, I did it at first after no sleeping the night before! when you want to do it, you just do it... (NIKE? arghhhhh!!!!), oh well! sometimes, when all is going the worst possible, music can make you forget everything.

BTW: nothing like playing in a concert, even the worst concert in wich you played drunk, tired, firsttimeiplaythis... people always will tell you how great you played... jejeje Big grin

Superfly,
You've got Amr Khaled and Cheb Khaled mixed up Big grin. Amr Khaled is a sort of politician, and he has nothing to do with music. Cheb Khaled, on the other hand, is an Algerian singer who is very famous, as you have already mentioned. As for Carlos Santana, what songs did he play? I love Santana's music, and would love to be able to attend one of his concerts.

Sorry for getting my Khaleds mixed up.  Sad

Carlos Santana did the song 'Smooth' from his Supernatural album but without Rob Thomas. The rest was jams with Khaled.
