Mass Anet Meet In The U.S. Revisited Thread

Posted (8 years 12 months 1 day 11 hours ago) and read 1821 times:

Awhile ago the idea came up of having a mass meet in the U.S. with hopes that everyone could join us (Europeans etc). So, I was actually talking to a few other members about this and no one really knows what happened to the idea. So, I am bringing it back to light. The idea is for the meet to be around September-November so that our European friends can get good fares. As for the location, the first and obvious suggestion would be MIA. Of course there could be other cities as options but only major airports that get lots of international traffic (LAX, SFO, ORD, JFK, IAH) etc etc.

So, putting aside any thoughts and ideas about me, who all is interested in doing this??? I think it would be really cool for everyone to interact with each other and get to know each other better. Everyone is invited of course and if it is @ MIA, I would definetly be willing to serve as an organizer and of course help out anyone whichever way I can once here. Thanks and I look forward to hearing your thoughts!  Big grin

We'll see what happens  Smile

I would suggest any of the following LAX, SFO, ORD, JFK, IAH. lots of planes and things to do. We could also addd SEA as a possibilty again many things to see and do.

I would try to attend anywhere (heck I need to move up from my Tin elite status so any miles would be great)

There is supposed to be an 'official' JFK meet website.. Someone will come up with the thread here that had that link.

I would like to see a meet at ORD. Since I'll be living a couple hours away, that would be great for me. Plus, I know that ORD gets some pretty cool traffic. And Chicago is a great city.

MIA all the way. Two reasons:

1) "The Holes": One of the few designated photog locations in the entire country which provides absolute freedom from police harassment, with holes in the fence and a perfect view of departing and arriving aircraft on three runways: 9L, 9R, and 12! Examples:

*Note, most of these probably have little or no zoom whatsoever.

See http://www.anniebees.com/Photos/SpottingMIA.htm , "Point A" for a complete rundown of the location.

2) Any other city would just be a waste for that time of year. It's not too hot (especially toward the November side), never too cold, and there's one thing MIA has that no other possible location does: Miami Beach. Sun, sand, a cool breeze, and plenty of eye candy. Yeah baby!

My first vote would go for IAH, as it is a direct flight for me. I think LAX has a direct link to ABQ as well.

MIA sounds good too, as I've never been there. It also might be easier for the European contingent as well.

Wherever the meet is to be held, I'll need al least two months lead time for the vacation approvals at work, financial planning, reservations, etc. So consider me extremely interested.

Those are Runways 8L, 8R, and 12 (the other runway is 09/27 on the south side of the airfield). You can also see departures from 26L and 26R if the aircraft lifts off far enough down the runway, and if an arrival on Runway 30 has a long roll-out, you can get some nice pics of them, too.

Living in MIA (nicknamed MIAA due to AA's stranglehold on us), I'd have to vote for Miami for the A.net meet.

i'll just chime in...for whatever the reason.

Miami sounds like a good place, for all the reasons listed.. also, you can get in the cars and even head up to Ft. Lauderdale or West Palm Beach.

Chicago is also good because you can head up to Milwaukee or down to Midway. You can even get great fares to/from Chicago airports to many midwest locations for the day if you wanted to do some mileage runs with fellow a.nets. For example, fly Chicago - Kansas City - Chicago - Detroit - Chicago, etc. Put some actual flying in there with it. Why not?

Of course there is the D.C. area. You have three airports to choose from and then a road trip over to the Air & Space Museum.

oh yeah...if we really want them to come.

haha.

they're going to read that and think "well, then!"

but to be fair to those in europe and in the sates, if it 's here or over there, the lower airfares won't come for everyone until january/february. and to pull off a "mass meet" which involves everyone for overseas, seeing is how it is almost August 1, you'd probably need to be fair and set a definite weekend now and stick to it. this way everyone gets a fair shot at being able to make arrangements to attend. so you're probably talking a good 4-6 months, which puts you into january anyway. JFK is going probably be your cheapest in point but then MIA is going to be the warmest.

so, in short.

1. someone needs to pick a definite date of reasonable time that cannot chnage after it has been decided. (4 months or more out)

2. this someone needs to pick a definite country

3. this someone needs to pick 5 or more possible locations

4. this someone needs to do research on airfares and narrow it down to 3

5. this someone needs to decide and announce the finalist city and announce with the date

6. this someone needs to do #1's through 5 in a two to three week period.

7. this someone needs to play "convention & visitors bureau" and start making arrangements for hotel/travel information for the incoming visitors

8. this someone needs to realize they are not "camp counselor" when the event actually happens and everyone is there on their own free will to have a good time

9. this someone is not me

Well, if you head to California, with a rental car, you can hit,
LAX
Long Beach
San Diego
SFO
Las Vegas
Burbank
And others, not sure about the Airfare, in terms of airfare, your East Coast locations could be cheaper, Florida would be a good location, which has the cheaper priced hotel & rental cars.

Can I suggest we schedule this Mass Meet for next year? Many people (me included) have already commited to holidays this year and although air fares can be quite cheap, time off isn't!

I would certainly be interested in MIA next September (2006) as I could bring the family and enjoy myself while they shopped etc.

A tour around the FLA airports would be dead cool. Been 17 yrs since I did MIA  Sad

And, anyway, this year I'm in SLC in September, so unless everyone goes there, it's definately out for me ! Big grin

Being that I'm in Europe from Sept-December, I'd vote for next year on this one. Also, FYI--the Euros are already planning a meet for October in Madrid, so you're likely to get fewer of them if you plan for the fall. Budgets will only stretch so far.

On the other hand, California is very do-able in the winter, as is Florida. If it's out here, I'm happy to help plan.

If we really want the Euros to come, then we might have to choose location based on airfare.

Fares from Europe to the US are the cheapest from mid january to the end of March. With a Saturday night stay fares hover around $350 to New York and $450 to LAX/SFO.

However, being winter the east coast may not be the ideal location except of course somewhere in Florida. Temperatures on the west coast are quite warm for it to be winter, ranges from 10-20 deg Celcius. I would suggest sometime in late January or February next year, places being either SFO or LAX.

cheers
