Bonds is still in the MLBPA, it just that he opted out of the union's group licensing agreement so that he could sign his own licensing agreements. This would give him more control over the use of his name and likeness and more money as well, since he doesn't have to share the money with any other player.
The group licensing agreement allows companies to use any participating player's name and likeness for their products without having to have licensing agreements with every single player they use. Imagine if baseball card company had to get indiviual license agreements from every single player? You would have a lot less players featured on baseball cards. By signing the group agreement, the participating players get a share of the sales based on how much they played.

Because he sucks ass, and took steroids. Haven't you heard him talk, just from his voice you know he takes steroids. He had some problems with his surgery and now he stalled when asked to go back and play. When I lived back in the bay area he was always in the evening sport news, and he would always taunt the reporters and trying to make himself look like he was the most important sport figure in town and the town revolved around him. Hey Bonds, your a clown that swings the batt for our amusement, don't kid yourself. That clown gets me angry, he treated the reporters like S%$#.
