Hi all!

I was wondering weather or not I should take my boogie board with me to cancun. I leave this saturday. Are the waves good enough on the Northern side to warrant me taking it, or should I just get one when I get down there? I imagine that they will be pretty rare if the resort has them?

No way. If you're on the northern side of the Hotel Zone, it's shielded from waves by Isla Mujeres. The waves are small and you'll be sorely disappointed if you have a boogie board.

If you're staying at a hotel facing east, those waves are decent for boogie boarding and body surfing.

The texas coast has sometimes decent waves for boogie boards and look where we are!

Yep, I know the place. Personally, I don't think you'll get a lot of use from a boogie board in that part of the hotel zone - the waves are pretty much nonexistent.

The beaches are all federal land though, so you can take a cab to some of the other beaches further down (south of km 10 on Kukulcan Blvd).

Don't bring traveler's checks, either - use the Banamex ATMs, since they give you a better deal on the exchange rate than the hotels or currency exchange places will.

And if you have the time and the means, I'd take Superfly's advice - I wanted to head over to Havana on my trip to CUN last month but my fiancee preferred to stay in CUN since it was her first time there (and my 20th or so!).

While serving in Belize, many British Servicemen went to Cancun, and the one thing they ALWAYS took was ................ plenty of condoms. I, of course, being newly wed, never went on one of these disgusting weekends but I do hear that out of 100 condoms taken on one trip, 2 were used - one over a guy's head and one through his nose.

Just thought it might help Big grin

Which means they either had unsafe sex, or they just never left the hotel room. There's so much scattered ass down there it's a sick joke.

Trust me.

Jetter, it's honestly unlike anything you've ever seen down there - unless, that is, you've been to CUN before.  Wink

Cancun is basically like Mexico's Las Vegas, minus the gambling. It's truly a 24/7 city, and most people who vacation there come to party and have a good time.

So you've got:

  • arguably the world's best beachfront resort

  • warm weather

  • cheap, free-flowing alcohol wherever you turn

  • tourists from all over the world

  • a general desire to have a good time - you're on vacation!

  • And of course people tend to lose their inhibitions when on vacation, since they realize that odds are they'll never see any of these people again. All of these factors combine to give people a "morally casual" attitude they may not normally exhibit back home.

I just arrived from CUN yesterday and can tell you that waves look a little big bigger this time of the year, but nothing like Cabo. I saw people who brought their boogie boards from home and other who rent it for just $10USD a day directly from the hotel (I stayed at the Fiesta Americana Grand Aqua just in front of "La Isla" shopping mall).

Agree, don't bring Traveler's checks, since exchange rates in CUN are the worst of Mexico (SJD runs in second place). If you have a Bank of America debit card, you should not get charged a fee for using the Scotiabank Inverlat ATM machines, since they are part of the Global ATM alliance (Double check it with BofA). Banamex is part of Citigroup, so most Citi Debit cards don't get charged for using Banamex ATM's. In both cases you will get a good exchange rate, but remember that some banks are now charging a 2-3% currency conversion fee + the foreign ATM fee.

It depends on the time of the year, the hotel were you are staying and the clubs / bars you attend. During Spring Break, CUN is a total chaos and you can go to almost any night club and meet crazy Amercan ladies all drunk and willing to do almost anything. During Summer, there are a lot of Mexican ladies who are quite special, since they are the what we call "upper class of society" and they think only Brad Pitt deserves them...
Since you will stay at the Gran Costa Real hotel, there won't be many mexicans there, so you will get mostly Americans and Europenas (depending on which tour operators booked the hotel).

Overall, CUN did not get that much damage from the Hurricane, but you will see some hotels closed (like the Avalon) and other with half of the rooms and the pool out of order (like the Sheraton). Additionally, I heard that either Xel Ha and Xcaret were severely damaged but they are trying to recover fast so tourist can enjoy them soon. Weather was amazing during the weekend, mostly sunny with 90°F...

That resort is on the north/south part of the hotel zone though, hence the better waves. The place Jetter's staying is on the east/west part up near Cancun Centro (near La Boom) and the waves suck ass there.

The Sheraton's being torn down though, save for the newest tower. It's one of the oldest hotels there - I first stayed at it in 1983!

You are correct EA CO AS, I have been to the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach and waves are not that high there and the beach has too many stones, but still, waves this time of the year look higher than on January/February (last time I was there). That is why I prefer the new FA Grand Aqua (much better location and good beach).

The Costa Real Hotel is close to Playa Linda, which I don't like at all so I recommend either going to a nicer beach with better waves or just enjoying the tranquility of the beach there.

Actually, the Sheraton is still operational, but the front tower (pyramid) was damaged by the hurricane. Starwood told the owners of the hotel that if they did not renovate it, they will take away the Sheraton brand, since standards have not been met for the last couple of years. The biggest tower (the one besides the FA Grand Aqua) has the 1st and 2nd floor out of service (for improvement) and you can see workers all over the hotel. The hotel adjacent to the Sheraton (Park Royal) had some rooms out of service and the Avalon Grand was closed entirely. The hotels that suffered the most from the hurricane were the ones in Playa del Carmen.
