I think Shaq taking a pay cut shows he is a team player (I may get reamed for that, but I love Shaq).

I think based on the trade, and presuming everyone is healthy and happy, the Heat could be the top dog in the league for next year.

I agree. Well, at least with the Eastern Conference anyhow. Think of their lineup... Dwyane Wade, Shaq, Udonis Haslem, Antoine Walker, Jason Williams, James Posey, maybe Damon Jones.... that team is looking a little scary.

Any word on the potential Joe Johnson sign and trade deal with the Hawks? It supposedly hit some sort of procedural snag. Other than that, if it goes through, Joe Johnson goes to Atlanta for Boris Diaw, 2 first round picks and a $4.9 million trade exception. I thought Johnson was good but that's a pretty high price to pay for him. He's good, but Nash, IMHO, was the one who made JJ's stats jump last year. Who the !$#^& is Boris Diaw, btw? I'm more optimistic about the 2 first round picks than him. Anyhow, the Suns have scheduled a news conference for this afternoon to introduce a "key free agent signee". I wonder who this is and if it's related to the Atlanta deal?

Shaq has been making 30 plus million for how many years now? I'm sure a pay cut to him isn't like a pay cut for the average guy. Get off Shaq's balls.

I hate to say it - and I know it'll sound like sour grapes - but after reading media reports over the past few days, this Joe Johnson sign and trade deal is the best thing for the Suns.

If they'd matched and kept JJ, it would have been impossible for them to keep Shawn Marion, Steve Nash and re-sign Amare Stoudamire to a maximum contract. Besides, one report has JJ bitching to friends that he'd "never re-sign at Phoenix" after Amare chided him one night for not playing D. Apparently he also griped about how he didn't get the "star treatment" that Stoudemire, Marion and Nash got.

News flash, JJ - you haven't done anything yet. That's why you're not getting the star treatment, and don't expect it to be handed to you anywhere. It has to be earned.

I liked how much he scored and what not, but again, you're right, he really hasn't done anything really. I think it'd be outstanding to get 2 1st round draft picks and another guy for him. Plus, this is Atlanta we're talking about. I wouldn't count on them doing that well, so those could be lottery picks.  bigthumbsup

I agree that PHX should be concerned most with keeping Marion and Stoudemire. Stoudemire was a steal for them... they let him go and they'd suck. And Marion, IMO, is still very underrated. Nobody really talks about him that much. You'll hear how good he is, but he doesn't make noise that some of the other ego driven "stars" do, like Kobe, C Webber and A.I.

I don't care how much money someone makes. His contract was expected to be 125 million. Now it is 100 million. $25 million is alot to anyone. Udonis Haslem who has not be paid all the millions superstars get paided took 10 million less also so he could stay with the Heat instead of playing for the Hawks.
Lets just hope everyone stays healthily and Everyone meshes in together. J-Will needs to make sure to pass the ball a lot. Walker and J-Will are used to being the best on the court now they are the 3rd and 4th man so they cant be selfish.

Don't give me that crap. Besides his basketball money, how much does he pull in from Commercials? Movies? Endorsements? Dude is NOT hurting because he took ONLY 100 million.  Yeah sure

Still 25 million dollars. If you made 125 million dollars would you just give away 25 million more?

Funny how he wouldn't take everything L.A. was willing to give him last off-season, and now he has to settle for even less. Anyways, he's on the downhill now and everybody knows it, it's really more like 2-3 years of Shaq for $100 mil, it would be a miracle if he has any impact in his 4th and 5th year.

That's what happens when a team does good, everybody's value appreciates for little reason... remember how bleak all the Bulls players have been after they left for new teams in '98 (Longley, Kerr, Kukoc etc.).

Haslem is like Johnson, he's only in the spotlight thanks to the other players on his team, on his own he's not worth all that much (which is not to say there aren't GMs out there willing to give him plenty of $ for nothing).

In other news, the Lakers acquired troubled PF-C Kwame Brown (and Laron Profit, who is not going to make the team) from the Wizards, in exchange for likeable swingman Caron Butler, and pseudo-PG Chucky Atkins. The Wizards also signed PG Antonio Daniels to a 5 year deal, there's another guy who's getting over payed, he's been playing for at least half a decade and has never been more than a consistent back up (played for 4 teams). Oh well.

Portland waived guards Nick Van Exel and Derek Anderson (they already have something like 3 serviceable point guards). Anderson is said to be in the sights of the L.A. Lakers, who have a big gaping hole in the PG position, something Derek can play, especially in Jackson's rendition of the triangle (prefering big PGs, DA is 6'5). L.A. could offer him as much as the MLE ($4.9M under the last CBA).

As expected Ray Allen stayed with Seattle. The Sonics did lose FA Jerome James, who signed with the Knicks (finally a real center for New York...), as well as Antonio Daniels as mentioned above.

Cleveland retained starting center Ilgauskas (big men always get overpaid but let's not get started on that), and signed forward Doneyll Marshall, formerly of the Raptors. Another free agent signing for the Cavs is SG Larry Hughes who was an important piece of the Wizards success last year. All that makes for a not-bad off season for the Cavs, but not great considering how much cap space they have.

Has to settle for less? What are you talking about? He had a $30M contract that he decided to get out of. He was guaranteed to make $30M this year, he decided not to. The Miami Heat offered him a $125M contract, he could have taken it.

He decided to get out of it because it was going to end after this season (it was an option year), being desperate to get some job security (and to try and make good on his well advertised promises) he opted out and signed a 5 year deal, for LESS MONEY. $30M per year > $20M per year. Hence my point. Where do you think he signed the $30M/year contract at?

BTW, history repeats itself: once again Shaq arrives to a new team and that team trades Eddie Jones away.  Wink

That's true, he did opt out. After all, it was for his better. His value will go down in the future, as you mentioned.

What I was pointing out was that the Heat offered him a $125M 5-year contract. Instead, he agreed to take $100M so the Heat could have more money to spend on other players and stay under the luxury tax.

Shaq is no longer the player he was when he was dominent. If they paid the 125, it would have been for his name as much as his erroding skills.

I believe the picks are lottery protected... but anyway a great move for Phoenix in my opinion!
