After watching a few films set in American colleges and universities, I can decipher most of the terminology used, however I am stumbling over one .Could someone explain the concept of homecoming. It features strongly in one of my favourite films, National Lampoon's Animal House , but I would really like to know what the hell they are on about!
Cheers!

I am working at a university this summer, so I can tell you that Homecoming is basically a reunion. Usually the alumni from classes that graduaded 5, 10, 15, 20, etc years ago return to their school to meet up with each other.

It’s evolved into meaning when your school plays a key rivalry, usually in football. There is normally a dance associated with the Homecoming Game.

Ehh...not at all schools...homecoming is also often scheduled when a bad team comes to town, so victory is somewhat of a certainty...

Dictionary.com defines "homecoming" as:
1. A coming to or returning home.
2. An annual event at schools, colleges, and universities for visiting graduates.

What if the homecoming school's team is really bad?

Then they lose. My high school's football team has lost three consecutive homecoming games. They're bad.

We're talking about colleges, not high school's homecoming.

Yeah, I know, but essentially, they are the same concept. A college team could lose on homecoming just like a HS team, I was simply using that as an example.

Our HC game was always against an easy team, so no one goes home upset, except the other team.

At a normal American University, homecoming is a time to celebrate school spirit, and loads of alumni converge upon the school to relive their glory days of college revelry. A homecoming football victory is even more of an excuse to get trashed. not like we need one on a saturday afternoon in Iowa City in the fall....or any time of the year or day of the week for that matter  Smile

The best part of school was Homecoming week aka "Spirit Week." We had some of the wackiest people doing some of the wackiest things. Even tho when I was in HS, our football team always get thier butts whipped by our rivals, but in all, it was still fun.
