I think it wouldn't be purdent to scrap them. The Olympics is great for all parties involved.
For one thing, it brings the world together (as stated by 747sp_rulez). What other event brings people together in a peaceable fashion? Until recently, and I believe it's not the norm, it was peaceable.
Athletes, regardless of nation and race, all have an equal opportunity to win a metal. This was one of the first "equal opportunity" events.
Cities can earn lots of money and get world wide attention. Plus, it forces them to clean up and show the city in a presentable fashion.

The people who diss the Olympics are probably enjoy Real World reruns. This is a national showcase for athletes around the world to showcase their abilities, you dont get worldwide coverage of Chinese gymnastics do you? They are one of the best countries at this sport, too. And it brings money in to the cities. Some of you may be experiencing luxuries in your city because of the Olympics that happened there twenty years before. The only reason I would see why you wouldnt like the Olympics is if you dont like sports, which is okay, but you gotta appreciate the moments like Kerri Strugs in the 96 Olympics.
