The Best Pubs In The World Are?

What makes a great pub? It's a mixture of atmosphere, conviviality, and drink selection. Sometimes, these three aspects come together to form the perfect evening. In great pubs and bars, this synergy happens on a consistent basis. Here are my favorites:

The Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto A great drinking bar, although the staff are big-city rock-and-roll jaded and don't really want anything to do with you. Bands play in the back, and you never know when some truly awesome international touring band is set up and ripping it. This is the Knitting Factory/CBGB of Toronto.

Clark's Ale House, Syracuse, NY I know. It's weird that one of the best bars I've ever found is smack dab in the middle of the frozen, bleak 'Cuse, but clarks is everything you could want in a watering hole. They advertise "101 beers and one sandwich. (it's a killer roast beef job)." And the owner and patrons respect quality beer. The A&F kiddies, frat boys, and party hoochies stay far away from here, which makes it a nice refuge for the non-self involved. I've never had less than a fantastic time at Clark's.

Paule's Metal Eck, Friedrichshain (Berlin), Germany
A dingy heavy-metal dive. Cannibal Corpse, Lyceum, and (of course) The Scorpions ripping from the speakers. You have to walk through a giant Fiberglas demon head to get in. One inside, you'll find a bar free of pretension, where the Muenchner Mullet is still the haircut of choice. The staff are really cool, too.

The best thing about German Bars is that even the scummiest ones have a bathroom you could perform surgery in. And even the worst have great German beer on draft.

De Laurierboom, Amsterdam, Netherlands In a city whose grass joints and flashy clubs get all the attention, this tiny bar on Laurierstraat is a joy. Smaller than your living room, I found it to be the most welcoming European bar I've ever entered. My visit here ironically, was the only time in Europe that a guy tried to pick a fight with me. It was an American expat. After he left, we were welcomed into a Dutch birthday party and woke up, somehow, back in the hotel.

The Cobblestone Pub, Dublin, Ireland Another completely unpretentious bar with a great Irish music session every night of the week (and sometimes a fantastic late-night gypsy jazz band in the back). Music makes this bar, and the dudes who join in are serious pros who can really play.

The effect of the music on the crowd is evident, with patrons from all over the world chatting as if it were a family reunion. The Cobblestone gave me a night I'd like to relive.

So let's hear about some other peoples' favorite spots. And let's hear a weak jab about me drinking too much from AA61hvy, who gets tanked on two grasshoppers at the Dayton TGIF. Maybe we can clue each other in on where in the world a quality evening can be spent.

It's been a few years since I've been there, but there's a Mad O'Rourkes Little Pub Company pub near the University of Birmingham (England). HUGE food! Great pies and pasties. Specialty ales and beers. A very fun place. I bought one of their ceramic toucans.

Sounds like Der Weisser Baer in Duesseldorf Altstadt, the whole place is black inside and the music is deafening.

Pubs I like...

Forester's Arms in Newlands, Cape Town
Pyrmont Bridge Hotel in Sydney
The Burnt Post in Coventry
Isle of Innisfree in Freiburg, Germany

I've been to loads of great pubs/bars in the world, too many to remember but here are some I have been to :-

Hong Kong - Felix Bar, Bit pricey, but worth it for the view alone.
Carnegies, Small and cramped but worth watching the ladies
dancing on the bar on a Wednesday.
Dusk 'till Dawn - Great Live Bands

Cape Town - La Med, Camps Bay on a Sunday Night, right next to the
beach and full of totty.

Key West - Hogs Breath - Nice Bar basically built round a few trees.

Acton Town - Red Back - Great Aussie bar with great live music - wear what you want type of place.

Leeds - Just about any bar you care to visit - 99% are great.

Miami - Clevelander, Great chilling round the pool surrounded by gorgeous
women - just try not to fall in the pool !!.

Pamama City Beach - Spinnaker - Great Live Bands.
Club La Vela - Great Setting, Great choice of music.

Adelaide - The Grand Hotel Bar in Glenelg on a Sunday Arvo - get there
by 4 if you don't want to queue - loads of totty too.

Can't think of any more just now.

I have a hard time classifying a boring bar in Syracuse as good. Especially when they serve Genny Cream Ale.

This is classic. I'm not sure the K.O. picture would do this blast justice.

I don't know of this pub, but I know of about 3 other Mad O'Rourkes pubs that have closed down.

My favourites:

The Ferry Inn, Salcombe, Devon, UK (haven't been there for a while but it used to be awesome and can't think that the views have changed much even if the service has).

The George, Norton St Philip Nr Bath, UK - one of the oldest pubs in UK - it's awesome.

The Hoffbrauhaus in Munich, Germany - what a place to party.

The Dry Dock, especially sitting outside in summer when the female residents of Leeds walk around wearing very little. I've spent many happy hours there! It also just happens to be almost under the flight path into LBA. Oh...They sell beer too! Bonus!

Atlanta, Georgia (and not a single one of them in Buckhead):

The Highlander
Manuel's Tavern
Brewhouse Cafe
Atkins Park (The oldest continually licensed bar in Atlanta)
The Vortex
Euclid Avenue Yacht Club (They're so cool they don't need a website)
The EARL
