You can always cross the border and pay a visit to Ensenada and the "Bahía de Todos los Santos"!!! Just kidding...
About San Diego, my favorite beach is located in the Island of Coronado across the bay from downtown San Diego. People say sand there is white, but for me it doesn't look that much (maybe because I am used to the sand of Cancun). But anyway, for me it is the best beach in San Diego...
Maybe the A.netters from SAN could help you more!!

There is a TON of nice beaches here. I've been very lucky growing up here in SD, at the beach! Pacific Beach is very nice....its the party/college crowd, along with Mission Beach. If you want sheer beauty, Torrey Pines, and La Jolla are wonderful. If you want some pics....send me an e-mail. For some reason..yahoo pictures can't post here. Have a good time while you are here. When do you plan on coming?

I can tell you with certainty NOT to go too much past Coronado for beach action (Imperial Beach, I'm talking about you).
Any further south, and you risk Tijuana sewage/garbage. My aunt rented a condo on the beach in Imperial Beach, and just a short walk past the condos, there was an incredible diversity of trash on the beach -- dead seals, plastic tampon applicators, dead dogs....you get the point.
Coronado IS beautiful, with a relatively isolated town and expensive houses. The Hotel del Coronado is the best here, and you pay the $$$$ for it.
There are a fair amount of hotels along Mission Beach and (especially) Pacific Beach. I've always found it strange that most of the larger hotels are not on the beach in San Diego, as compared to Miami Beach. You have to drive a short distance to either Mission Bay or Hotel Circle.
Enjoy your stay....I like to visit San Diego, but it was just too boring to live there.

Mission Bay is nice! There is also a funfair type thing near there (with a good wooden roller coaster), and it is right underneath the SAN departures. There are volleyball courts etc around, and a few shops. About 5-10 minutes drive from downtown and plenty of parking.

La Jolla Shores is somewhat of a tourist beach, as is Pacific Beach and Mission Beach, because of their proximity to downtown. When Im back home I like to go to Torrey Pines, and Del Mar for beaches....if you are into surfing, check out Swami's, or Moonlight for fairly local surf hang-outs.
