The #1 ABC Monday Night Football Game Ever Is.....

As rated by ABC themselves, the 1985 game when the Miami Dolphins beat the undefeated (at that time) Chicago Bears, 38-24. ABC had on a show of the top 36 moments in Monday Night Football history and that was the top moment. It was also the top rated game to date.

I was at that game at the atmosphere was electric. I was also without the use of my voice for the next two days from yelling so much. One thing I remember the most was during halftime. I was going to the "facilities" and saw this guy I never saw before in my life walking to me with the same Dolphins t-shirt on, kinda gave this "hell yea!" yell, and had the hardest high five I had ever given/recieved. It was one of those "at that moment" moments. It was quite a night.

I remember that night as well. Great game and only one of 3 distinct memories at th OB for me. One other (unfortunately) was standing at the rail on the top deck on the south side and slinking down to my kness as Doug Flutie's ball (which at one point was about eye level) came crashing down in a sea of BC uniforms for THE hail mary of my life  Sad The last event I remember @ the OB was The U-2 Joshua Tree tour and I attended with my wife (to be) on our 3rd or 4th date (we had met waiting in line for the tix.  Smile

Ted....you were NOT there for that game, were you? Damn...that was a classic. I saw it on the tube.

The MNF game I remember the most was in 1978 when we beat the Rams 15-12 in an all field goal game (for us) as it was the first MNF game I ever saw the Falcons play in and win.

I figured someone would have mentioned this game, although, I didn't know it would have made number 1. Ditka and Buddy Ryan had the halftime locker room moment of all time yelling at each other. As a life-long Bears fan, that was a downer, but on the flipside, I like Dan Marino, as the Bears would have ended his career had he and the Dolphins made it to the SuperBowl.

Humm lets see, The Dolphins were having their typical MARGINAL season, The Bears were about to put the nail in our 'undefeated claim to fame' coffin, and I was going to sit at home?? No I was there I vaguely remember most of it save walinkg outside the OB knowing that I could still hold my head up high in relation to the Dolphins.

I think I was 4 years old for that one

Unfortunately the last several years of being a Dolphan have been Brutally un-kind. Ever Since Marino tore his Achilles, the Dolphins have REALLY SUCKED

Touche. You did do the undefeated thing, and most of the guys left who toast each other the last time an undefeated goes down are class guys. The Bears will be back someday, though. They need a pass rusher and good health on the O-line. This is unrealistic, but, if they have that this year (if the guy we got from you - Ogunleye [spelling} - does his thing at DE), and Kyle Orton can perform - BEARS 16-0 baby!!  rotfl

Being a Dolphin fan is like being in an abusive relationship. You know that they're never going to change. You know that you should stop supporting them but you can't. You hope beyond hope that next season will be the one.

The one where all the players run around like idiots chasing a ball and falling all over one another in those cute, tight pants showing off their hot little tushies. I mean, how homoerotic can you get???

In regards to the Dolphins, I've been a fan since the early nineties. Looking back over the last 15 years, I can't remember seeing the Dolphins out of contention before mid December (other than last year). How many teams can you the same about?

Do miss watching Dan Marino though.

You're right, although, they're also one of the worst performers in December. If they knew how to win in the cold, they'd have multiple 10-plus-win seasons.

What was that MNF Jets game where they came back from way down late in game and ended up winning in OT?

No doubt, The "Monday Night Miracle" in 2000 at Giants Stadium when the New York Jets came back in the 4th quarter and beat the Dolphins. I remember watching that game screaming for the Jets to comeback (They are my #2 team). Vinny Testaverde's my boy!!!!! I remember him when he played at the University of Miami!

That's the one! Must have been past 1:00AM ET by the time that game ended. What a turnaround; from a wimper to a roar. Wow.

And in terms of MNF trivia, the #1 highest scoring MNF game remains the 48-47 Redskins-Packers game in 1983. What a shootout that was.

I remember those 83-84 Packers....they'd drop 45 points on a team but you'd still have to ask whether they won or not. Sounds like the 2005 edition. Eek.

I used to be a real nut for MNF, back when it was Michaels/Dierdorf/Gifford. It's stunk ever since. In '97 (it had to be - that's when I was home and I can only find stats for this game then) Bono and the Chiefs were down against the Raiders at the end of the game only to win in under a minute going the length of the field. I remember he hit Andre Rison in the back of the end zone as time expired. The main reason I remember is because MNF rolled out about 4 games in a row that year that went down to the wire. I found in MNF history: http://espn.go.com/abcsports/mnf/s/alltimehistory.html that the Cowboys beat the Eagles by 1 the next week (can't remember that game, though) - it was one of the last times I was psyched for MNF.

If you consider marginal to be in the AFC Championship game, then you have pretty tough standards.

Quoting Allstarflyer (Reply 11):

Quite frankly the 1985 Bears may have been the strongest team in NFL history. Certainly they should and could have beaten any opponent in that super bowl. That was a very ugly superbowl. I've tried to block most of it out of my memory.

I thought the twist they tried w/Dennis Miller was a step in the right direction, though, of course, he wasn't the persona needed for that. And Dan Fouts was lousy. I was hoping more of a tandem of Joe Cool (Montana) and Drew Carey. Really, though, the current team stinks - Michaels thinks he's all about the show or vice-versa (and don't get me wrong, the guy is solid) and Madden (BOOM!!) should stick to video games. Sorry, John, you were great w/Summerall, but those days are long past.

I'd be remiss, though, in not pointing out a solution in light of pointing out the problem. I think a tandem of Michaels, Shannon Sharpe (w/his wit combined w/his playing experience) and Steve Young (fine analyst on Sunday's w/Chris Berman) would make for a great team.
