Ever since 9-11 they've used that method to convey high profile news, but to me it is quite frightening when I log onto CNN.com and see a large bold font headline because it reminds me very much of 9-11. Since I was in Ithaca when 9-11 happened I didn't know anything about it until 2 hours after it happened, mainly due to the tied up telecoms network at the time, but one of the first ways I've found out about it was a blank white page at CNN.com with the large boldface letters AMERICA UNDER ATTACK.

The CNN Headline Page

I think the Louisiana hurricane damage is an important story, but hurricanes happen every year and as devastating as it is it pales in comparison to the devastation of the 9-11 attacks.

Thousands may have died, according to city officials. I certainly believe that is on scale with 9/11. And why does everything have to be compared to 9/11?

I'm not so sure about that. They are very different, one a violent attack, and one an act of nature, but I think the impact of this hurricane is profound and will take its place on that short list with 9/11 and a few other events. It certainly doesn’t pale in comparison to it. One of the largest metro areas in the country has been, in large part, destroyed. That didn’t happen on 9/11.

The aftermath of 9-11 was much more controlled than this. There seems to be utter chaos all in multiple states regarding this tragedy. Its effects are being felt in every state already with the rise of gasoline prices (up to $3.05 here from $2.65 over the weekend).

Also, the response time with this current tragedy seems delayed. We should have been acting sooner. It seems all hell broke loose the day after the storm and people were just starting to realize how bad it was.

If it turns out that thousands are killed than I would say this is worse than 9-11. People are without the basic necessities of life, but then again this is happening all over the world on a daily basis, but it's ignored.

Thousands may be dead. Citites have be wiped off maps. This storm might be worse than 9-11. Sure it was not a terrorist attack but this is one bad storm. For devistation this hurricane is much worse than 9-11 is. Both are horrible events and can be put on the same list of horrible events in US History.

Scares me more when I turn on FOX News before the storm and they're talking about the storms impact on oil before its impact on people and their property...

It doesn't bother me at all, but I can understand what you're saying. Especially when crap like the Michael Jackson case was always on a boldface headline. Although, they are headlines...which is the point of the banner.

New Yorkers started going back to work the day after 9/11. Everybody was emotionally shattered but life slowly resumed. They played World Series games a few weeks later.

Nobody in New Orleans will be going back to work for months, except of course those involved in the cleanup. Nobody will go home for months. It's inconceivable that a population of that size will be unemployed and homeless for so long. In that respect it's a much bigger impact than 9/11.

I first heard the news on 9/11 from Bob Edwards on NPR: "It has been an extraordinary and tragic morning across the United States. About 9 AM Eastern time, two separate planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. One of those planes is reported to have been hijacked, an American Airlines jet flying from Boston to Los Angeles. A short time later, the two towers of the World Trade Center collapsed. Casualties are streaming in to New York City hospitals."

One headline on CNN.com we'll NEVER see:
