Go to the support page at www.apple.com. THere's a way to reset the ipod, which may solve your problem. Or they may have replacement firmware for download.

A word of advice for the future. If the iPod says do not disconnect and it doesn't show up in iTunes, you must go to the "safely remove hardware" icon thingy in the taskbar next to the clock in order to safely remove it. This way, it shouldn't delete all of your music. This is assuming you have XP.
Oh and to reset it now. You have to toggle the hold switch (switch hold on then off) and then hold down the select button and the menu button at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen. After this, you should be able to use the iPod again. This works for the mini and the big iPods with the color screens.

One suggestion is go and take a look at http://www.ilounge.com all the information you wanted to know about Ipod. kind of like airliners.net for ipods.
