Mexican elections are coming up soon and I am giddy with anticipation. I do no understand, however, why Vincent Fox's name is English. Last time I checked Fox in Spanish was Zorro which is a much cooler name. If I remember correctly there was a reality-tv show called Zorro.

No offense to el mexicanos, but I think Fox is a stupid name for a Mexican. yes  Its not like we call our president Gorge Arbusto.

Quoting Fumanchewd (Thread starter):

it may be before long that you will somebody with a "real" Spanish or Chinese name in the White House, or a member of the Black minority, like the Mayor of New Orleans ! And the U.K. may get a PrimeMinister with a Pakistani name, while France may get a President with an Arab name. Things get changing in this world !

while I do NOT quite see what there should be stupid about. It reveals an English ancestry to some extent at least, but nothing else and nothing more .

The man has Irish and Spanish ancestry.... We need a native Mexican president, like President Juarez (who built and looked after a liberal and tolerant Republic)... after all 30% of the populace is native and only 10% white... talk about minorities in power.

Just a stupid thread that might get a few laughs. Don't ever take me or yourself so seriously. It is interesting, however, that possible candidate Santiago Creel has American roots and is derided for it, yet Fox is not as much for his English. Either way I would prefer El Presidente Arbusto in Los Estados de Unidos.

Names are not meant to be translated. Jon Doe will be Jon Doe in Cantonese, French, German or Wookie  Wink

I think his grandparent was either Irish or British, hence the surname Fox.

BS. President Fox is as Mexican as Juan Perez or Benito Juarez. It's plainly stupid to ask people running for office to have a "real" Mexican last name. President Fox was born here and that's we all should care of.

If anything, we should change our Constitution to grant Mexicans who were born outside the country the right to run for president. Your love for the country you live in is what makes you a good citizen, not the place you were born or the origin of your last name.

On the other hand the name of the first Irish PM after independence was de Valera.
