Fmr. US Secretary Of State Colin Powell On Katrina

Powell might want to be careful with what he says. If he's seen as being disrespectful of the president in any way he just might find himself on the wrong end of the next smear campaign.

"Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said he fails to understand why better preparations were not made before Hurricane Katrina struck."

Quote:
There were "a lot of failures at a lot of levels - local, state and federal", Mr Powell told ABC.

"There was more than enough warning over time about the dangers to New Orleans - not enough was done," he said.

Mr Powell's views will be heard with particular interest as he is a highly respected figure and a prominent black American, the BBC's Justin Webb reports from Washington.

The Pew Research Center, which ran the new opinion poll, also indicated that two-thirds of the African-Americans questioned believed the government reaction would have been faster if most of those affected had been white.

But Mr Powell said so many African-Americans were left unprotected because they were poor, rather than because they were black.

It "should have been a blinding flash of the obvious... that when you order a mandatory evacuation, you can't expect everybody to evacuate on their own", he said.

Who are these 28% who think that Bush did all that he could?! Even if you don't hold Bush accountable, who in their right mind would say he did every last thing he possibly could?!

So true. Maybe Mayor Dipshit should have thought of this in the NO evac plan.

I couldn't have said it better myself had I posted it in techicolor.

Maybe Mr. Mayor  hissyfit  could have actually practiced the plan once . . . just once.

Maybe Mr. Mayor could have had the couple hundred school busses turned submarines at the ready instead of sitting in a parking lot, and then blaming the fed because no one comandeered Greyhounds.

Maybe Mr. Mayor could have had pre-designated Hurricane Evac pickup points as it oulined in the plan they in fact had instead of "Go to the Superdome".

Maybe Mr. Mayor could have gotten off his ass - even without Federal or State direction - and moved his city's population out of harms way instead of issuing an bogus, impossible evacuation order less than 24 hours before the shit storm?

Maybe Mr. Mayor should subscribe to The Weather Channel so he can see these big frickin' hurricanes BEFORE they make landfall or listen to the National Hurrican Center when they CALL him on the PHONE and tell him about it?

Maybe Mr. Mayor could have had prepositioned stocks of food and water at his "Refuge of Last Resort" like Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Mobile, Pensacola, etc . . . .?

I could go one - but no one gives a hoot how badly the state and local governments hosed this operation . . . it's easier for everyone to pick on their favorite target of the day rather expand their minds . . .

Is that the same team that has been launcing smear campaigns against President Bush & anybody connected with him....

This answers the race question, but wait a minute, the Black community thinks that Powell is a traitor.. Smile

When the hell are they going to get out !

As many as 10,000 of the original 450,000 residents were still believed to be in New Orleans by the time the mayor ordered the compulsory evacuation of the city. [quote]

Yes, yes, the mayor is responsible also. Nothing said about the president should be interpreted as any sort of exoneration of the mayor or the governor for that matter. In fact, I will readily concede that Bush isn't even the primary screwball in charge this time around. However, that still doesn't mean Bush should be given an unconditional 'get out of jail free' card simply because someone else was more directly involved and managed to screw up worse than he did.

At first I thought Bush was pretty much outside of this mess, but he put himself in it by trying to jump on the 'everything's under control' bandwagon followed abruptly by 'nobody thought the presumably inevitable would ever really happen' nonsense position. When he finally started to acknowledge the obvious reality of the issue, the damage had already been done. It sucks to think about all those hours and eventually days wasted while he was patting the back of folks who quite simply weren't getting the job done. He even had the gall to imply that it was somehow a surprise that the levies broke and water actually flooded the city that so many had said would probably flood someday.

Absolutely, and it's worked like charmed before America was a nation and is the old reliable 'ace-in-the-hole' if all else fails ...or when they feel the need to employ 'a divide and conquer' strategy.

Funny how the chain-of-command, if the person on the bottom is screwed up, they will make everybody on up look bad.

Only HALF right there Kevi . . . those poor souls who had no way to leave town, no means to leave town, now I feel terribly about that . . . and there's over 200 busses drowned in a submarine because of a grossly negligent inept city and state government. . . .

Those folks that had the means to leave (and carry some other soul with them) and didn't, who are now screaming, "Help me, Help me". Well, stupid is the appropriate adjective.

You were close though . . . but still no cigar . . . study harder next time  wink

Disgusting.

So going by this "logic" anyone who saw the first strike on the WTC and didn't immediately go far away from the city has no business crying help me help me and is stupid for even asking for assistance.

You fit the law enforcement profile quite nicely

Just how gawddamn ridiculous does this sound??? What an assinine analogy. The two can't even be compared. A sneak attack that happened in an instant vice a deliberate, predicted, announced and monitored Hurriance. Spare me your drivel.

I've said that all along . . . NoUFO . . . the failures in NOLA are the responsibility of all levels. I give the biggest portion of the responsibility to the Mayor of an unprepared city. Then the cry baby Governor who has no clue how to manage in a crisis. And FEMA for moving like Pond Water, and in some cases, Stagnant Pon Water.

It doesn't matter how different you can claim they are. The point is, for various reasons people didn't leave and got caught up in tragedies. Calling them stupid and laughing at their help me claims is horrible and morally disgusting.

I would love to take lessons from all you. Your vast intelligence is just so overwhelming I find it hard to even speak sometimes. All your knowledge about the world is so different than what I've read in school and heard from various racists/sexist/class hating individuals. I need to have some study sessions to take notes on all these great ideas put forth by you superior people

Let me spell this out for you . . . . in plain, non-Vulcan English . . .

While it's certainly, utterly tragic that these people lost everything - and I realize that - for them to have had a means to escape this debacle (and possibly save one or two other people who may not have had the means to escape) is stupid. For them to then begin sceaming help me because they refused to help themselves when they had the means to do so is a self-inflicted wound.

I have no sympathy for self-inflicted wounds . . .

And, I assure you I'm not laughing . . . since it's my tax dollars (and yours) that will foot the bill . . .

No gawddamn hindsight required when a predicted, forecasted, broadcasted, and monitored Cat 5 Hurriance is coming . . . the only hindsight you better have, if able to leave, is the view of the place your hauling ass away from in your rear view mirror . . .
